I think this has to do with the fact that, compared to other species, we've become very good at survival. Our bodies, or vessels, have evolved to their limit. And our mind has become evolved to such a great extent that our present necessities are easily taken care of. So we begin to look further into time, how can we make sure our needs are met in the future?

We're stuck with what evolution has done biologically, and evolution has not prepared us for today's culture and today's environments.  So we have to take our development into our own hands, and that means learning how to compensate for our dumb impulses.  I wouldn't worry about how humanity fares as a whole, it's always been a solo game.

Welcome evermore to gods and men is the self-helping man.  For him all doors are flung wide: him all tongues greet, all honors crown, all eyes follow with desire.  Our love goes out to him and embraces him, because he did not need it.

~ R.W. Emerson, "Self-Reliance"
