Thoughts?

No. Just an observation.

Maybe we're semi-supernatural.

very true, thats because the common defintion of nature is that which is seperate from or untouched by humans, thus we are indeed unatural by nature.

By other definitions we are natural as long as we are true to our own natures individually, which again many of us are not.

Either way the whole paradox is reliant on choice of syntax, or definition, but cool observation anyways.

You can't be "unnatural" since everything you are capable off and the environment you exist in is "natural".

The nature of the rational animal is to have one foot in the material world and the other in the immaterial. It is completely natural for a human to be a spiritual being.

Yes, and spirituality  may set us off from the natural things.
Then, the more we base our environment on 'set off spirits', the more unnnatural we get, loosing 'ground control' - hey Mojor Tom.
It's for sure, that that's true for places, where many people gather together, like in big cities, where's no real place for nature.
Each other relays on each other and not to 'nature', so they get more and mor unnatural.
So even if our brain is made out of nature, the external has a very big influence on our spirit. Perhaps, we will never loose all of our naturality, but the more we relay on 'artificality', the more unnatural we get ourselves. 'Somebody' loves to drive us into that - attention foilheads

Humans occupy a lonely and significant rung on the evolutionary ladder: our imagination is probably the only thing that truely separates us from the rest of the life here on Earth. We hold an uncanny ability to think ahead of our most immediate needs...and we have used this ability to create a "copy of nature". Whereas all other life uses what nature provides naturally, we attempt to create our own tools and "improve" upon what is provided naturally. Some animals live in caves, trees, or dig holes in the ground. We take the idea of a cave (walls and a roof with an entrance) and create a building. Some animals use sticks and rocks to help with their survival. We contruct elaborate technologies to help with our survival.

So yes, in many ways it is our "nature to be unnatural" in that we use our imagination and forward-looking minds to create specialized copies of the tools nature provides for the rest of the animal kingdom.

Like the way the post-war Iraq rebuilding was planned out..? (Sorry for the PAL reference.)

We hold the ability to think ahead...however some (perhaps many) of us chose to wave that ability :smirk:

"Like the way the post-war Iraq rebuilding was planned out..? '

exactly like that. someone had all his immediate needs met (the need for food, shelter, sex, etc) and yet he still felt the need to plan out an elaborate campaign with which he could profit in the millions from stolen lives and stolen oil. thats some pretty advanced fore thinking, although rebuilding was never really part of the plan.

I know what your saying though, sorry for responding seriously to a joke. However iraq is a good example of part of what sets us aside from nature, namely the willingness to cause unnescessary suffering in return for unnescessary material wealth.

so, what is it then? that makes one need so much more than what is necessary?
(like rich corrupt politicians, for example)

"nature is what hasnt been influenced by conciousness"

sorry man, thats not working for me. All animals have conciousness, how can that be unnatural? Even plants have a form of conciousness.

i believe very very much in a theory of mine about relativity. all things can be explained in a matter of relativity. for example--
humans *do* need to make 'more than what is necessary'. when donald trump desires to create a new corporation that is super successful or whatever, it is merely his next 'big improvement' or goal. much similarly, a man who lives in a tribe in a small village desires to build a new hut or whatever. that is his next goal.

a billion dollars to donald trump may mean the exact same as five goats to someone else.

it seems to be the drive that's universal.
