Guys ....... this is going to be long. I see a lot of people posting about how unhappy they are in this forum and I can relate to most all of the posts in one way or another. After living most of my life selling drugs, abusing drugs, sccrewing anything that walked, partying my ass off and having friends as messed up as I was - Ive been making some major changes in my life lately. This shift has been happening over the course of the last 4 years or so... although the first year of it was just thinking about it and being unsatisfied in general.
My NEW focus is on health, happiness, and bringing more spirituality into my life. Overall life enhancement in general. Im back in school and 14 months out from graduating in a field that will start me out on a very respectable pay scale that is pretty damn recession proof. Im eating all raw foods ... tons of raw fruits and raw veggies. As well as LEAN meats and protein sources (fish, chicken, some red meat), whole grains, etc, etc. Im growing my own veggies and making my own breads from scratch. Ive cut out all fast food, and nearly cut out all resteraunt food, fats, creams, and butters.
Im also exploring spirtuality and getting in touch with whats really important. Ive gotten rid of almost all the people in my life that are "those" types. As in, the types of people that dont really care about you. The ones that wont be there if you need them. Which leaves me with a small handful of really good people and a desire to meet more GOOD people - to which Im pursuing actively. I dont drink very often and I do drugs, these days, even less. I might smoke a bowl 2 or 3 times a year and Ill go have a beer or two with friends every other month but thats the extent of it. No clubs or binges anymore ....
The last big habit I had to break was masurbation. I know that many wont agree with me that it is bad, but after I had everything straightened out I realized just how much damage it was doing. For me, it wasnt the actual act of mastubation that was damaging, but the mindset that came with it and the porn that I used to fantasize. The thing was, I normally would laugh with my buddies about it and make jokes, it was pretty common place. If I felt like a blond that day Ild pull up some porn and fantasize away, asian today ... what the hell ... asian.net ... lol. Problem is I think subconciously that was causing me to be unsatisfied in my real life relationships. Believe it or not ... it doesnt matter but thats what Ive realized... for myself.
Anyway, I now have a handle on it and have quit altogether, Im not in the clear just yet but Im well on my way and have gotten in control of my urges and learned discipline ... in all areas. I have a handle on most everything now; where life was once filled with only superficial happiness here and there, paired with deep unhappiness, things are now looking bright and I feel great. Although, I am experiencing some anxiety issues, mostly that Im releiving with excersize. I do fall off the wagon, but now days thats pretty rare and mostly Im on it in full swing. School has added a huge amount of stress and then combine that with the fact that I have gotten rid of all my stress releiving outlets (because they are destructive in and of themselves) I am going through a struggle to equalize myself in healthy ways.
Which leads me to my question. I think I want to start doing a basic yoga routine a minimum of three times a week if not daily. Can anyone give me a very basic routine or set of positions I could start with?
Ive only played with yoga ONCE - last week and the stretching it offerred felt great. Although I was very stiff and uncoordinated I dont think it will take long to make huge improvements my body tends to adapt rapidly. Also, I was too focused on learning the movements to be able to get into any type of meditational state but Im assuming thats just because I dont know the movements and its new to me. Ild very much like it to turn into a meditational/ spiritual/ stretching routine.
Ive spent the last 10 years on a heavy bodybuilding routine so I do have more muscle on my frame than most. Previously my training has been highly mass oriented. These days Im shifting away from bulk. Im switching to more circut style training in an effort to get my fitness regimin focused on overall health. However, since I have been very big in the past (and lean) even circut training makes me grow so even though Ive slimmed down from where I was previously, I do tend to hold a high amount of muscle even with the slightest resistance training (due to muscle memory).
Before last summer I rarely did cardio, however, I was still able to hop on a treadmill and run 10 miles in under 2 hours(at the age of 30.) Also, last summer I thought I wanted to start biking ... to add some cardio and overall fitness. I went and bought a bike and after owning it a month I joined a multiple sclerosis fundraiser and ended up riding 75 miles! lol ... I never in a million years thought Ild complete it but I did, and placed 42nd out of 290 people. So I guess my cardio fitness would be considered good, even though I really havent done any cardio for a long time (when I was 19-21 y.o. I had 3 years of intensive cardio training though so maybe that has something to do with it.)
I think Im going to shift my weight training sessions to only twice a week (circut training). Then Im going to add sprinting sessions twice a week.
Sprints are well known for their ability to shred fat, increase the output of growth hormones and testosterone levels which enhance overall well being, and increase cardiovascular fitness. Sprints actually burn more fat then long distance running or low intensity cardio and they keep your metabolism ramped up for days whereas long distance running does not.
So Ill be lifting with a circut training resistance routine twice a week and sprinting twice a week.
...... I would like to add a basic yoga routine to add stretching excersizes as well as help bridge the gap between my fitness regimins and the quest for enhanced spirtuality - and to add some meditation type activites to my life which I think will be very beneifical and is what Im missing at this point.
Soooo .... anyone have any suggestions?? Something simple to start with ... maybe a 5 or 6 pose routine?? Where do you guys think I should start? Flexibility and a routine that will allow me to reach a meditational state are important aspects for me. Keep in mind though currently Im not flexible at all! lol ...
Also, one last thing ... I just want to mention to everyone that is having issues, look inside yourself, you know what you need to do ... the answer is there. Sometimes its just hard to hear because you dont want to listen - because making changes means you have to work, sacrifice, and do things that wont be easy. Deep down, I always knew what I should do, I just didnt want to. Now for the first time in a long time Im feeling pretty damn happy.
I just need something to bridge the gap between my fitness, my food, and my spirtuality... something to tie it all together. I think meditation ... specifically yoga ... might just be that bridge.
Thanks guys ... and best wishes to everyone..
