    #977091 - 10/20/02 03:15 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

I've always wondered why people put vermiculite ontop of the birthing cake? do it do anything?

It's used as a sort of casing layer to help keep moisture supplied to the cake.

If you are referring to the plain, dry vermiculite layer placed in the jar before sterilization, it is to help keep out airborne contaminants during colonization.

When you first make the jar, you put a layer of dry, nutrientless, verm ontop, so even when the green lands it wont have anything BRF to grow on. You shouldnt fruit cakes EVER. Always turn it into a casing, or at the very least, flatten it. Cakes dont fruit for crap.

I disagree. Casing are better, but cakes are fine, especially if someone just wants to get a couple of fruits. Its a learning step.

When i left some of the dry verm on top of a cake, it pinned very well in that area, and was lacking in the uncovered areas. Does it do something? For me it insured many pins.

A lot of folks do this over at Mycotopia. They call it double ended casing. Some swear by it.

From what ive seen however, the result from a double-ended cased cake is similar to a traditional cake as far as yield.

Save that verm for more cakes or a real casing.
