this is something that hakuin said many centuries ago. It is not a question that is supposed to simply know after reading it. It must be meditated upon until a satisfactory answer is reached. Sometimes, people meditate on this one question for their entire lives without getting past it. It's called a Koan.

I don't pretend to know the answer to this Koan, but unless one of you has given it serious thought and dedication, neither do you.
