I always have trouble answering this. The first four books have the meat of the teachings. Number three and four are mind blowing. Number one sets the stage and is fairly uninteresting compared to the rest but IMO you need that background to understand fully what is happening. I'll say this. In the books CC fell into this adventure ass backwards. He thought something was happening when it was really something quite different. This begins to dawn on him by the second book.

Zactly, Some of this can be used as a metaphor for important aspects of your personal journey. I always connected it also to realizing that I am controlled by culture.

If I were to start with a Castaneda book, which one should I read first? Which one is the best? Is there an "order" to them?
Read them in order. I believe the first one is A Separate Reality; a Yaqui Way of Knowledge. And don't get put off by the first 50 pages or so which I seem to recall being boring as fuck.

It's been a long time. Do you agree that they should be read in order?

You guys would probably like Don Miguel Ruiz. It's "Toltec" wizdoms without all the mumbo jumbo. I love Peter Coyote's readings of both authors.
