knowing you're not stable
    #8926180 -

but unsure of how deep it runs, whether it is just a situational/emotional/mental issue

for the record, mental illness (bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, paranoia, psychotic breakdowns) exist on both sides of my families.  on my father's side, there is a high percentage (just about every member) of these various issues.  less prevalence on my mother's side, but the same severity, especially with psychotic and paranoia matters

a number of past family members were submitted and kept at mental institutions.  one has broken out of many and only one person has contact with him.  another was given shock treatment back in the 70's/80's when it was popular for quite some time and only continued downhill from there

what can be done, or should be done, about these things?  i have used copious amounts of psychedelics over the last four years (which i know is probably more harmful than helpful with previous familial histories), daily marijuana use off and on for the last few years, and recent use/abuse of alcohol

What can be done?  In your case, if I was worried I'd stay away from psychedelics and pot, or avoid drug use altogether.  It's better safe than sorry with your mind at stake.

Knowing is half the battle.

The advice above is good. Stop taking mind altering drugs if you feel very mentally agitated (unstable). If you cannot help yourself, find someone that can help you.

Having said that, I would like to add...

Be mindful and understand your feelings before you become a slave to them. Your knee jerk reaction to life will betray you of wisdom and tranquility. This is what it means to practice restraint.

Say two people get a mosquito bite that is very bothersome. The first one feels this sensation and starts to think about the feeling and becomes involved with it (taking it personally); so the sensation grows. He begins to scratch it until it bleeds, it gets infected and becomes an open sore. The second person feels the same sensations, however he does not dwell or get involved with the feeling. He lets be there without feeding extra attention into it. He does not scratch the itch because he knows that scratching it will make it an open sore that can get infected.

The sensation of the mosquito bite, and the sensation of negative thoughts are much the same. When they arise, they are there. So allow them to be there without getting involved into them. If you get angry (or depressed), be angry, but don't get into all the reasons of why you are angry and you will find that anger, or any feeling, passes much quicker. Then you can open your door and breathe in the fresh air, and feel the refreshing warmth of sunlight, again.

---
The way the brain works, is that every thought that occurs builds stronger pathways leading to those thought patterns. So if you always think that you hate yourself, that thought pattern will occur more and more until you realizes it is an unbeneficial thought and that it is mind made. The more you think about feelings, the worse the feelings become.

Mind is the forerunner of all mental states; good or bad.

--------------------
As the life of a candle,
my wick will burn out.
But, the fire of my mind
shall beam into infinite.
