It's very firmly established to have benfits in memory/recall.  Jonathan Ott is my only source on the neuroprotective bit, though PubMed might turn something up.

both are poisons, you will only die if your stupid enough to not listen to your body tell you when you've had enough.

sure you don't hear anyone dying from smoking too many cigarettes at one time, but when is the last time you heard a group of people standing around someone chanting, "smoke! smoke! smoke!"?

The chances of dying from alcohol in one night are a lot higher than from cigarettes.
