Thanks for articulating something that has been on the tip of my tongue and needs to be addressed on a broader scale.

Lacan wrote (paraphrasing here) that the major fallacy (phallus-y?) of popular psychology/sociology today is there is a humanist notion that individuals are able to control alter or manipulate their identity to their own benefit through psycho-analysis or religion or drugs or culture or anything...when in fact a human's identity is un-alterable...formed by subconcious desires and memories.

We are mapped by forces beyond our control. We can try and understand our subconcious, or maybe we can learn to have more wisdom about ourselves or learn to enjoy the ride, but are much less in control than we think.

I am not saying this is true but it has been interesting for me to think about.

We are mapped by forces beyond our control. We can try and understand our subconcious, or maybe we can learn to have more wisdom about ourselves or learn to enjoy the ride, but are much less in control than we think.
