The brain models itself subjectively (See; Being No One: The Self-Model Theory of Subjectivity by Thomas Metzinger), but this distinction is more practical than empirical. There is a functional isolation of sorts, but in terms of universal laws the brain is not separate from the universe itself. So in some sense the brain of each of us is a property of the universe. However, the self-model that the brain constructs is far more isolated in its representation. "I" am me and "You" are you and there is no immediate sense that either of us is part of a larger system.

This self-awareness and its isolated/dualistic character generates a battery of self-reflective or self-conscious emotions and strategies for regulating itself within this delusional framework (See: The Curse of the Self by Mark Leary) and this representational structure can be almost completely insane (See; Altered Egos: How the Brain Creates the Self by Todd E. Feinberg).

Most of the time this representational structure ends up mirroring the theory of mind that is dominant in the culture. So if people by-and-large believe in metaphysically free-will, then most minds will be socialized to believe this as well. Such assumptions can form the basis of injustices if they are not true. The associative way the mind works means that pretty much everyone is prejudiced in some way, and based on something quite arbitrary. To take a classic example of prejudice against "blacks"; the concept of a Black is completely arbitrary and depends on the subjective interpretation of skin tone and probably a motivated form of classification. An entire culture - or species for that matter - could be fundamentally insane and acting in accordance with what it believes is just while being inherently unjust. A metaphysical assumption like "Free-Will" for example can drastically change the way we think about people, behavior and justice. (See: A Universe of Consciousness: How Matter Becomes Imagination, The Handbook of Self and Identity, Handbook of Personality and Self-Regulation, The Ego Tunnel: The Science of the Mind and the Myth of the Self, Ordinary Prejudice, Pathological Altruism, Cold-Blooded Kindness, etc..)

My grandmother was known as Queen of the Musty Farts. Her farts were by far the most musty farts I've ever smelled. Let's just say that on your mustiest day, your farts would smell positively dry compared to hers. When she cut one, it was like being in a British dungeon wearing day old wet socks. It was like opening up a mildewy book in the basement of an abandoned house. It was like taking a submersible through the wreckage of the titanic with two pieces of mold plugged into your nostrils. I'm talking MUSTY. Plumbers would come in to the house and tell us that we had to tear the whole house down, as it clearly smelled of water damage. We'd just chuckle and say, "Nope. That's just grandma." They wouldn't believe us because her farts were silent, and it started a lot of fist fights.
Unfortunately, she resented the title of Queen of the Musty Farts. Every time there was an article in the paper or a feature in the local news about her, she refused to even acknowledge it. We'd say, "Nana, look, they're talking about how you're the Queen of the Musty Farts," and she would just grumbled and look at her knitting, and maybe rip a few must-bombs to show her dissatisfaction. She preferred to be known by the fact that she was a mother of four and a federal judge. But to us, she was royalty.
