Mexicali Blues (official cowboy song thread)

This one deserves it's own thread: Laid back in an old saloon, with a peso in my hand, Watchin' flies and children on the street, And I catch a glimpse of black-eyed girls who giggle when I smile, There's a little boy who wants to shine my feet. And it's three days ride from Bakersfield and I don't know why I came. I guess I came to keep from payin' dues. So instead I've got a bottle and a girl who's just fourteen, And a damn good case of the Mexicali Blues. Yeh! Is there anything a man don't stand to lose, When the devil wants to take it all away? Cherish well your thoughts, and keep a tight grip on your booze, Cause thinkin' and drinkin' are all I have today. She said her name was Billy Jean and she was fresh in town. I didn't know a stage line ran from Hell. She had raven hair, a ruffled dress, a necklace made of gold, All the french perfume you'd care to smell. She took me up into her room and whispered in my ear, "Go on, my friend, do anything you choose." Now I'm payin' for those happy hours I spent there in her arms, With a lifetime's worth of the Mexicali Blues. Is there anything a man don't stand to lose, When the devil wants to take it all away? Cherish well your thoughts, and keep a tight grip on your booze Cause thinkin' and drinkin' are all I have today. And then a man rode into town, some thought he was the law. Billy Jean was waitin' when he came. She told me he would take her, if I didn't use my gun, I'd have no one but myself to blame. I went down to those dusty streets, blood was on my mind. I guess that stranger hadn't heard the news Cause I shot first and killed him, Lord, he didn't even draw And he made me trade the gallows for the Mexicali Blues. Is there anything a man don't stand to lose When he lets a woman hold him in her hands? He just might find himself out there on horseback in the dark Just ridin' and runnin' across those desert sands.

Friend of the Devil
I lit out from Reno, I was trailed by twenty hounds Didn't get to sleep last night 'till the morning came around.
Set out runnin' but I take my time A friend of the devil is a friend of mine If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight.
Ran into the devil, babe, he loaned me twenty bills I spent the night in Utah in a cave up in the hills.
Set out runnin' but I take my time, a friend of the devil is a friend of mine, If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight.
I ran down to the levee but the devil caught me there He took my twenty dollar bill and vanished in the air.
Set out runnin' but I take my time A friend of the devil is a friend of mine If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight.
Got two reasons why I cry away each lonely night, The first one's named Sweet Anne Marie, and she's my hearts delight. The second one is prison, babe, the sheriff's on my trail, And if he catches up with me, I'll spend my life in jail.
Got a wife in Chino, babe, and one in Cherokee The first one says she's got my child, but it don't look like me.
Set out runnin' but I take my time, A friend of the devil is a friend of mine, If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight

Desolation Row Robert Zimmerman
They're selling postcards of the hanging They're painting the passports brown The beauty parlor is filled with sailors The circus is in town Here comes the blind commissioner They've got him in a trance One hand is tied to the tight-rope walker The other is in his pants And the riot squad they're restless They need somewhere to go As Lady and I look out tonight From Desolation Row
Cinderella, she seems so easy "It takes one to know one," she smiles And puts her hands in her back pockets Bette Davis style And in comes Romeo, he's moaning "You Belong to Me I Believe" And someone says," You're in the wrong place, my friend You better leave" And the only sound that's left After the ambulances go Is Cinderella sweeping up On Desolation Row
Now the moon is almost hidden The stars are beginning to hide The fortunetelling lady Has even taken all her things inside All except for Cain and Abel And the hunchback of Notre Dame Everybody is making love Or else expecting rain And the Good Samaritan, he's dressing He's getting ready for the show He's going to the carnival tonight On Desolation Row
Now Ophelia, she's 'neath the window For her I feel so afraid On her twenty-second birthday She already is an old maid
To her, death is quite romantic She wears an iron vest Her profession's her religion Her sin is her lifelessness And though her eyes are fixed upon Noah's great rainbow She spends her time peeking Into Desolation Row
Einstein, disguised as Robin Hood With his memories in a trunk Passed this way an hour ago With his friend, a jealous monk He looked so immaculately frightful As he bummed a cigarette Then he went off sniffing drainpipes And reciting the alphabet Now you would not think to look at him But he was famous long ago For playing the electric violin On Desolation Row
Dr. Filth, he keeps his world Inside of a leather cup But all his sexless patients They're trying to blow it up Now his nurse, some local loser She's in charge of the cyanide hole And she also keeps the cards that read "Have Mercy on His Soul" They all play on penny whistles You can hear them blow If you lean your head out far enough From Desolation Row
Across the street they've nailed the curtains They're getting ready for the feast The Phantom of the Opera A perfect image of a priest They're spoonfeeding Casanova To get him to feel more assured Then they'll kill him with self-confidence After poisoning him with words
And the Phantom's shouting to skinny girls "Get Outa Here If You Don't Know Casanova is just being punished for going To Desolation Row"
Now at midnight all the agents And the superhuman crew Come out and round up everyone That knows more than they do Then they bring them to the factory Where the heart-attack machine Is strapped across their shoulders And then the kerosene Is brought down from the castles By insurance men who go Check to see that nobody is escaping To Desolation Row
Praise be to Nero's Neptune The Titanic sails at dawn And everybody's shouting "Which Side Are You On?" And Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot Fighting in the captain's tower While calypso singers laugh at them And fishermen hold flowers Between the windows of the sea Where lovely mermaids flow And nobody has to think too much About Desolation Row
Yes, I received your letter yesterday (About the time the door knob broke) When you asked how I was doing Was that some kind of joke? All these people that you mention Yes, I know them, they're quite lame I had to rearrange their faces And give them all another name Right now I can't read too good Don't send me no more letters no Not unless you mail them From Desolation Row

This should be the official cowboy song thread.
El Paso
Out in the West Texas town of El Paso I fell in love with a Mexican girl. Nighttime would find me in Rose's Cantina, Music would play and Felina would whirl.
Blacker then night were the eyes of Felina, Wicked and evil while casting a spell. My love was strong for this Mexican maiden, I was in love, but in vain I could tell.
One night a wild young cowboy came in, Wild as the West Texas wind... Dashing and daring, a drink he was sharing, With wicked Felina, the girl that I love.
So in anger
I challenged his right for the love of this maiden; Down went his hand for the gun that he wore. My challenge was answered, in less than a heartbeat The handsome young stranger lay dead on the floor.
Just for a moment I stood there in silence, Shocked by the foul and evil deed I had done. Many thoughts ran through my mind as I stood there; I had but one chance and that was to run.
Out through the back door of Rose's I ran, Out where the horses were tied... I picked a good one; he looked like he could run, Up on his back and away I did ride.
Just as fast as
I could from the West Texas town of El Paso, Out thru the badlands of New Mexico. Back in El Paso my life would be worthless; Everything's gone in life nothing is left. But it's been so long since I've seen the young maiden, My love is stronger than my fear of death.
I saddled up and away I did go, riding alone in the dark... Maybe tomorrow a bullet may find me, Tonight nothing's worse than this pain in my heart.
And as last here
I am on the hill overlooking El Paso, I can see Rose's Cantina below. My love is strong and it pushes me onward, Down off the hill to Felina I go.
Off to my right I see five mounted cowboys, Off to my left ride a dozen or more. Shouting and shooting; I can't let them catch me, I've got to make it to Rose's back door.
Something is dreadfully wrong for I feel A deep burning pain in my side It's getting harder to stay in the saddle. I'm getting weary, unable to ride.
But my love for
Felina is strong and I rise where I've fallen; Though I am weary, I can't stop to rest. I see the white puff of smoke from the rifle, I feel the bullet go deep in my chest.
From out of nowhere, Felina has found me, Kissing my cheek as she kneels by my side. Cradled by two loving arms that I'll die for, One little kiss and Felina goodbye.

Another great Marty Robbins' tune, but I'm thinking about how Mike Ness snarls out an excellent cowpunk version!
Big Iron
To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day Hardly spoke to folks around him, didn't have too much to say No one dared to ask his business, no one dared to make a slip The stranger there among them had a big iron on his hip Big iron on his hip
It was early in the morning when he rode into the town He came riding from the south side, slowly looking all around He's an outlaw loose and running, came a whisper from each lip And he's here to do some business with a big iron on his hip Big iron on his hip
In this town there lived an outlaw by the name of Texas Red Many men had tried to take him and that many men were dead He was vicious and a killer, though a youth of twenty four And the notches on his pistol numbered one and nineteen more One and nineteen more
Now the stranger started talking, made it plain to folks around He was an Arizonia Ranger, wouldn't be too long in town He was here to take an outlaw back alive or maybe dead And he said it didn't matter that he was after Texas Red After Texas Red
Wasn't long before this story was relayed to Texas Red But the outlaw didn't worry, men that tried before were dead Twenty men had tried to take him, twenty men had made a slip Twenty one would be the Ranger with the big iron on his hip Big iron on his hip
Now the morning passed so quickly and it was time for them to meet It was twenty past eleven when they walked out in the street Folks were watching from their windows, everybody held their breath They knew this handsome Ranger was about to meet his death About to meet his death
There was twenty feet between them when they stopped to make their play And the swiftness of the Ranger is still talked about today Texas Red had not cleared leather when a bullet fairly ripped And the Ranger's aim was deadly, with the big iron on his hip Big iron on his hip
It was over in a moment and the crowd all gathered 'round There before them lay the body of the outlaw on the ground Oh, he might have went on living but he made one fatal slip When he tried to match the Ranger with the big iron on his hip Big iron on his hip
Big iron, big iron Oh when he tried to match the Ranger with the big iron on his hip Big iron on his hip

Me & My Uncle
ell, me & my uncle went ridin' down South Colorado, west Texas bound We stopped over in Sante Fe That bein' the point just about half-way And you know it was the hottest part of the day
I took the horses up to the stalls Went to the barroom, ordered drinks for all Three days in the saddle, you know my body hurt It bein' summer, I took off my shirt And I tried to wash off some of that dusty dirt.
West Texas cowboys, they's all around, With liquor and money, they's loaded down, So soon after pay day, you know it seemed a shame You know my uncle, he starts a friendly game High, Low, Jack, and the winner takes the hand.
My uncle started winnin', cowboys got sore One of them called him, and then two more, Accused him of cheatin', now I know, it couldn't be I know my uncle, and he's as honest as me Yeah, and I'm as honest as a Denver* man can be.
So one of them cowboys, he starts to draw, I shot him down Lord, he never saw, ** Shot me another, that man, he won't grow old. In the confusion, my uncle grabbed the gold And we high-tailed it down to Mexico
Now, all those cowboys, out of their gold Loved my uncle, God rest his soul Taught me good, Lord, taught me all I know Taught me so well, I grabbed that gold And I left his dead-ass layin' by the side of the road.

Mexicali Blues is definetely my favorite Dead song! I love the happy beat...and the part that goes
"She took me up into her room and whispered in my ear, "Go on, my friend, do anything you choose." Now I'm payin' for those happy hours I spent there in her arms, With a lifetime's worth of the Mexicali Blues."
yummy

One of my Fav. Ded slow jamz. Makes me sad.
The Stranger (Two souls in Communion) Words & tunes by Pig
What are they seeing, when they look in each other's eyes? What are they feeling, when they see each other smile? Is it love, I don't know - or an emotion that I've outgrown?
Did I take a wrong turn on life's winding road? Won't somebody help me find the right way to go? My life need some correction, alteration in [and?] direction. Won't somebody stand by [comfort?] me - yes, I'm lost, yes, I'm lost, Yes, I'm lost.
What is the secret of this tie that binds? [time of mine?] Two souls in communion, both body and mind. Is it special magic, or just the nature of things? Conceived of [Come see the?] great spirit, not for beggars but for kings.
You who have found it please help me along. I'm a man, I'm a man, - I'm not made out of stone. My needs they are simple, I don't want anything, but I surely want to fly on those wings, on the run, one more time.
All I wanna do, fly up, fly home. Fly on those wings of love, fly up, fly home, I'm a stranger [a staying?] in your town, fly up, fly home, Help me somebody please! Fly up, fly home.
I wake up early in the morning, fly up, fly home, you know I never saw you babe, fly up, fly home.
I just can't seem to understand, can't seem to understand what's wrong, fly up, fly home.
What I wanna do is take a little ride with you, on the wings of love, woh-oh one more time, one more time.

one of my faves for sure....but I wonder why the Dead did not perform this tune more often
New Speedway Boogie
Please don't dominate the rap Jack if you got nothing new to say If you please don't back up the track This train got to run today
Spent a little time on the mountain Spent a little time on the hill Heard some say better run away Others say you better stand still
Now I don't know but I been told it's hard to run with the weight of gold Other hand I heard it said it's just as hard with the weight of lead
Who can deny? Who can deny? it's not just a change in style One step done and another begun in I wonder how many miles?
Spent a little time on the mountain Spent a little time on the hill Things went down we don't understand but I think in time we will
Now I don't know but I been told in the heat of the sun a man died of cold Do we keep on coming or stand and wait with the sun so dark and the hour so late?
You can't overlook the lack Jack of any other highway to ride It's got no signs or dividing lines and very few rules to guide
Spent a little time on the mountain Spent a little time on the hill I saw things getting out of hand I guess they always will
I don't know but I been told if the horse don't pull you got to carry the load I don't know whose back's that strong Maybe find out before too long
One way or another One way or another One way or another this darkness got to give One way or another One way or another One way or another this darkness got to give

My favorite is:
Is there anything a man don't stand to lose, When the devil wants to take it all away? Cherish well your thoughts, and keep a tight grip on your booze, Cause thinkin' and drinkin' are all I have today.

I've Been All Around This World
Up on the Blue Ridge Mountains, there I'll take my stand. Up on the Blue Ridge Mountains, there I'll take my stand. A rifle on my shoulder, six shooter in my hand; Oh Lord, I been all around this world.
Lulu, my Lulu come and open the door. Lulu, my Lulu come and open the door. Before I have to walk in with my old 'forty-four'. Oh Lord, I been all around this world.
Mama and Papa, little sister makes three. Mama and Papa, little sister makes three. They're comin' in the mornin' ; that's the last you'll see of me. Oh Lord, I been all around this world.
Hang me, oh, hang me, so I'll be dead and gone. Hang me, oh, hang me, so I'll be dead and gone. I wouldn't mind your hangin', boys but you wait in jail so long. Oh Lord, I been all around this world.
Up on the Blue Ridge Mountains, there I'll take my stand. Up on the Blue Ridge Mountains, there I'll take my stand. A rifle on my shoulder, six shooter in my hand; Oh Lord, I been all around this world.

New Minglewood Blues
I was born in a desert, raised in a lion's den I was born in a desert, raised in a lion's den And my number one occupation is stealing women from their men
Well I'm a wanted man in Texas, busted jail and I'm gone for good Well I'm a wanted man in Texas, busted jail and I'm gone for good Well the sheriff couldn't catch me But his little girl sure wished she would
Yes and the doctor call me crazy, some says I am some says I ain't Yes and the doctor call me crazy, some says I am some says I ain't The preacher man call me a sinner, but his little girl call me a saint
Well a couple of shots of whiskey, women round here start lookin' good Well a couple of shots of whiskey, women round here start lookin' good Couple more shots of whiskey, I'm goin' back to Minglewood
It's T for Texas, yes and it's T for Timbuctoo It's T for Texas, yes and it's T for Timbuctoo Yes and it's T for [San Francisco - or wherever!] Where the little girls know what to do
found this awesome site with more info on the song http://www3.clearlight.com/~acsa/intro.htm

Mama Tried
The first I remember knowin' was that lonesome whistle blowin' And a youngin's dream of growin' up to ride. On a freight train leavin' town, not knowin' where I was bound No one could steer me right, but mama tried.
Was the only rebel child from a family meek and mild Mama seemed to know what lay in store In spite of all my Sunday learnin' For the bad I kept on turnin' and mama couldn't hold me anymore.
And I turned 21 in prison, doin' life without parole No one could steer me right, but mama tried, mama tried Mama tried to raise me better, but her pleadin' I denied That leaves no one but me to blame cause mama tried.
Dear old daddy rest his soul, left my mom a heavy load She tried so very hard to fill his shoes Workin' hours without rest, wanted me to have the best Oh she tried to raise me right, but I refused.
And I turned 21 in prison, doin' life without parole No one could steer me right, but mama tried, mama tried Mama tried to raise me better, but her pleadin' I denied That leaves no one but me to blame cause mama tried.

I would like to know what the fuck they did to that song in the late 70's, might not have been untill the 80's but they really fucked it up. I can't tolerate that silly groove they play it in but I freakin love that song untill they changed it.

Cassidy
I have seen where the wolf has slept by the silver stream I can tell by the mark he left, you were in his dream Ah child of countless trees Ah child of boundless seas What you are, what you're meant to be Speaks his name, though you were born to me Born to me, Cassidy
Lost now on the country miles on his Cadillac I can tell by the way you smile, he is rolling back Come wash the night-time clean Come grow the scorched ground green Blow the horn, tap the tambourine Close the gap of the dark years in between You and me, Cassidy
Quick beats in an icy heart Catch colt draws a coffin cart There he goes and now here she starts Hear her cry
Flight of the seabirds Scattered like lost words Wheel to the storm and fly
Faring thee well now Let your life proceed by its own designs Nothing to tell now Let the words be yours, I'm done with mine
^^^I love that one!! I know some hippies who actually named their daughter Cassidy after this song!

(I feel like a loser, but this song makes me cry nearly every time I listen to it because it reminds me of my dog that passed away, god I'm pathetic.)
Dark Hollow
I'd rather be in some dark hollow where the sun don't ever shine Then to be at home alone and knowin' that you're gone Would cause me to lose my mind.
Well blow your whistle freight train carry me far on down the track Well I'm going away, I'm leaving today I'm goin', but I ain't comin' back.
I'd rather be in some dark hollow where the sun don't ever shine Then to be in some big city, in a small room, with you upon my mind.
Well I'm going away, I'm leaving today I'm goin' but I ain't comin' back

And one more from Reckoning (I love that album)
Since the last one was a sappy song, I'll submit this as my happy song...
Rosalie McFall
Out on the lonely hillside in a cabin low and small Lived the sweetest rose of color my Rosie McFall Her eyes were bright and shining and her voice was sweet to me Knew that I would always love her and I hoped that she loved me
My eyes turned to me, my darlin' and this is what she said: You know that I would always love you when you and I are wed. Then God way up in heaven one day for her did call I lost my bride, oh how I loved her, my Rosie McFall
I searched this wide world over through cities great and small But I never found another like my Rosie McFall

Big River
Well I taught that weeping willow how to cry cry cry, Taught the clouds how to cover up a clear blue sky. Tears I cried for that woman are gonna flood you big river, And I'm a gonna sit right here until I die.
I met her accidentally in St. Paul, Minnesota, She tore me up everything I heard her drawl, that southern drawl. Well I heard my dream went back downstream, cavortin' in Davenport, And I follow you big river when you called.
Well I followed her down to St. Louie, later on down the river, Trader said she's been here, but she's gone, boy, she's gone. Well I followed her down to Memphis, but she just walked off the bus, She raised a few eyebrows and she went on down alone.
Well I've gotten on down to Baton Rouge, River Queen roll on, Take that woman down to New Orleans, New Orleans. I give up, I've had enough, followed my blues on down to the gulf, She loves you big river more than me.

Rosalie McFall is an excellent song! Heres one of my all time favorite Dead songs:
Dire Wolf In the timbers of Fennario the wolves are running round The winter was so hard and cold, froze ten feet 'neath the ground Don't murder me, I beg of you don't murder me Please don't murder me I sat down to supper, 'twas a bottle of red whiskey I said my prayers and went to bed, that's the last they saw of me When I awoke, the dire wolf, six hundred pounds of sin Was grinning at my window, all I said was "Come on in" The wolf came in, I got my cards, we sat down for a game I cut my deck to the queen of spades but the cards were all the same In the back-wash of Fennario, the black and bloody mire The dire wolf collects his due while the boys sing round the fire Don't murder me, I beg of you don't murder me Please don't murder me

Screw all you people for not posting this one earlier, shame on you. ( I know, this started out as the cowboy song thread, but hey, its all the Dead.)
Saint Stephen
Saint Stephen with a rose, in and out of the garden he goes, Country garden in the wind and the rain, Wherever he goes the people all complain.
Stephen prospered in his time, well he may and he may decline. Did it matter, does it now? Stephen would answer if he only knew how. Wishing well with a golden bell, bucket hanging clear to hell, Hell halfway twixt now and then, Stephen fill it up and lower down and lower down again.
Lady finger, dipped in moonlight, writing "What for?" across the morning sky. Sunlight splatters, dawn with answer, darkness shrugs and bids the day goodbye.
Speeding arrow, sharp and narrow, What a lot of fleeting matters you have spurned. Several seasons with their treasons, Wrap the babe in scarlet colors, call it your own. Did he doubt or did he try? Answers aplenty in the bye and bye, Talk about your plenty, talk about your ills, One man gathers what another man spills.
Saint Stephen will remain, all he's lost he shall regain, Seashore washed by the suds and foam, Been here so long, he's got to calling it home.
Fortune comes a crawlin', calliope woman, spinnin' that curious sense of your own. Can you answer? Yes I can. But what would be the answer to the answer man?

Green, Green Grass of Home
The old home town looks the same as I step off the train Meeting every train in my mind's eye till the man in mail came Hair like gold, lips like cherry It's good to touch the green, green grass of home Green, green grass of home, green green grass of home.
Only dream I know of is to be found hair like gold, lips like a cherry It's good to touch the green, green grass of home They'll all come to greet me, on the steps of my sweet dream It's good I dreamt the green, green grass of home I wait and look around me at the broken walls that surround me And out here I was on the ground.
There's a garden in the path of progress unharmed through winter's day break Then I'll touch the green, green grass of home They'll all come to greet me from the chains of the old dark hollow The green, green grass of home They'll all come to greet me on the steps, my sweet dream

Brown-Eyed Women
Gone are the days when the ox fall down, Take up the yoke and plow the fiends around. Gone are the days when the ladies said' "Please, Gentle Jack Jones won't you come to me."
Brown-eyed women and red grenadine, The bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean. Sound of the thunder with the rain pourin' down, And it looks like the old man's gettin' on.
1929 when he stepped to the bar, drank to the dregs of the whiskey jar. 1030 when the wall caved in, he made his way selling red-eyed gin.
Brown-eyed women and red grenadine, The bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean. Sound of the thunder with the rain pourin' down, And it looks like the old man's gettin' on.
Delilah Jones was the mother of twins, Two times over and the rest were sins. Raised eight boys, only I turned bad, Didn't get the lickin's that the other ones had.
Brown-eyed women and red grenadine, The bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean. Sound of the thunder with the rain pourin' down, And it looks like the old man's gettin' on.
Tumble down shack on Big Foot country. Snowed so hard that the roof caved in. Delilah Jones went to meet her God, And the old man never was the same again.
Daddy made whiskey and he made it well. Cost two dollars and it burned like hell. I cut hick'ry just to fire the still, Drink down a bottle and be ready to kill.
Brown-eyed women and red grenadine, The bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean. Sound of the thunder with the rain pourin' down, And it looks like the old man's gettin' on.
Gone are the days when the ox fall down, Take up the yoke and plow the fiends around. Gone are the days when the ladies said' "Please, Gentle Jack Jones won't you come to me."

W. Tx Teardrops Old 97's Well the roadmaps of west Texas never gave me good advice. The trains all roll where the roads don't go, now I lay awake at night, Just wondering where the rest is so I hit that iron gate, And I yelled good-bye to that wife of mine, I may be running late.
I'm a-rolling on, I'm a-rolling on, Rolling out past El Paso Texas, where I might have had a home. I made my bed, so here I lie. I'm rolling west Texas teardrops in my eye.
Though I felt a lonesome feeling in Dulce New Mexico, I was happier than I'd ever been in my El Paso home. But I thought about the woman whom I left to roam the land, And I cried so much it dug a rut they call the Rio Grande.
I'm a-rolling on, I'm a-rolling on, Rolling out past El Paso Texas, where I might have had a home. I made my bed, so here I lie. I'm rolling west Texas teardrops in my eye.
And my destination is written upon my feet, And the stars above are about the only company I keep. I raise my pass and take my seat. I'm rolling fast with a teardrop on my cheek.
So I guess there'll be no family, so I guess there'll be no wife. Gonna roll away on an old steel dray, it's gonna be my life. And the roadmaps I been reading, I never came to figure out. All I know is I'd explode by any other route.
I'm a-rolling on, I'm a-rolling on, Rolling out past El Paso Texas, where I might have had a home. I made my bed, so here I lie. I'm rolling west Texas teardrops in my eye.
Wish The Worst Old 97's
Why aren't you here? It's almost 4 am. I finished up all of your beer, Now I'm startin' on your gin. I went through your diary, flipped through your phone book -called all your friends. I just wanna know where you been, I just wanna know where you been.
I pulled back your sheets, Now I'm crawlin' in your bed. Every drink's one more defeat, And every footstep hurts my head. I don't want excuses. I don't wanna hear that you were out with your friends. I just wanna know where you been, I just wanna know where you been.
CHORUS I hope you crash your momma's car. I hope you pass out in some bar. I hope you catch some kinda flu. Let's say I wish the worst for you.
I hope you're happy with yourself. I hope you found somebody else, cause I ain't askin' you again. I just wanna know where you been, I just wanna know where you been.
Why am I here? I've got better things to do. I could hang out on the pier, down by the Hudson, sniffin' glue. I guess I'm a loser, but I like being miserable, swimming in sin. I just wanna know where you been, I just wanna know where you been.
CHORUS
W-I-F-E Old 97's I've got my wife, the other women, and the whiskey killing me. The first two make it so that I see red. The third one makes it so that I can't see. If I had half a brain left after my debauchery, I'd give up the other women, and the W-I-F-E.
Wedding vows weren't made to be broken. These here lips weren't made to tell no lies. Somewhere along the way, I guess I must have gone astray, 'Cause I'm drinking here, and wishing for to die.
I've got my wife, the other women, and the whiskey killing me. The first two make it so that I see red. The third one makes it so that I can't see. If I had half a brain left after my debauchery, I'd give up the other women, and the W-I-F-E.
It's just like my lttle sister (dear old momma) told me, In the end, you reap what you sow. I've been sowing seeds from Mexico to Tennessee, And I'm reaping now an awful lot of woe.
I've got my wife, the other women, and the whiskey killing me. The first two make it so that I see red. The third one makes it so that I can't see. If I had half a brain left after my debauchery, I'd give up the other women, and the W-I-F-E.
I'd give up the other women, and the W-I-F-E.
West Texas Waltz by Butch Hancock
When you're ready for steady to go dancin', romancin' Grab your sweetheart and jump in your car Drive right on down to the bright lights of town You'll be glad you don't have to drive far You'll be happy you don't have to go far
Park your pickups and Caddilacs, Fords and Renaults Get out and dance like the dickens to the West Texas Waltz
My pickup needs a tune-up, I better get up and make up My mind to get on it today The tractor's been actin' up and the sewer lines are backin' up But I'll be dancin' tonight anyway I'll go dancin' tonight anyway
Cause I count my blessings, I don't count my faults I like to dance like the dickens to the West Texas Waltz
Grandmammy, grandpappy if you plan to stay happy You better lace up your best dancin shoes Come see us, don't write us, you can stop your arthritis Just by dancin' away your blues Dancin' away your blues
So bind up your bunions with band-aids and gauze Get out and dance like the dickens to the West Texas Waltz
I took my baby after dark to the old baseball park And we sat in the center field stands I asked her, "How many outs?" She said, "I've got my doubts, but you can count 'em on one of your hands." I said, "Baby, I've got much better plans."
"I'll kiss you on the strikes, you kiss me on the balls, and we'll go dance like the dickens to the West Texas Waltz!"
I met a fine lady banker and I'd sure like to thank her For the credit she gave me made me shout She changed my whole attitude and to show her a little gratitude I decided I'd just ask her out. Yes I thought I just might ask her out
I said close up your windows, honey, lock up your vaults Get out and dance like the dickens to the West Texas Waltz
We spent the next to the last dollar at the old ice cream parlor On a milkshake and a malt and a pop Then we heard us some sounds, there was a honky tonk lounge Next door to the ice cream shop Next door to the ice cream shop
Now only two things are better than milkshakes and malts And one is dancin' like the dickens to the West Texas Waltz
And the other is somethin', but really it's nothin' To speak of it's somethin' to do If you've done it before, you'll be doin' it some more Just as soon as the dancin' is through Right after the dancin' is through
And if anybody asks you why, just tell 'em because You been dancin' like the dickens to the West Texas Waltz.

Easy Wind
I been balling a shiny black steel jack-hammer, been chippin' up rocks for the great highway, live five years if I take my time, ballin' that jack and a drinkin' my wine.
I been chippin' them rocks from dawn till doom, while my rider hide my bottle in the other room. Doctor say better stop ballin' that jack, if I live five years I gonna bust my back, yes I will.
Easy wind cross the Bayou today cause there's a whole lotta women, mama, out in red on the streets today. And the rivers keep a talkin', but you never heard a word it said.
Gotta find a woman be good to me, won't hide my liquor try to serve me tea, cause I'm a stone jack baller and my heart is true and I'll give everything that I got to you, yes I will.
Easy wind going cross the Bayou today there's a whole lotta women out in red on the streets today. And the rivers keep a talkin', but you never heard a word it said.

Here's a couple of jazzier, hep-cat, cowboy songs... Cow Cow Boogie Out on the plains down near Santa Fe I met a cowboy ridin' the range one day And as he jogged along I heard him singin' The most peculiar cowboy song It was a ditty, he learned in the city Comma ti yi yi yeah Comma ti yippity yi yeah Now get along, get hip little doggies Get along, better be on your way Get along, get hip little doggies He trucked 'em on down that old fairway Singin' his Cow Cow Boogie in the strangest way Comma ti yi yi yeah Comma ti yippity yi yeah (Chorus) Now singin' his cowboy songs He's just too much He's got a knocked out western accent with a dixie touch He was raised on local ways He's what you call a swingin' half breed Singin' his Cow Cow Booogie in the strangest way Comma ti yi yi yeah Comma ti yippity yi yeah (Repeat Chorus)

Here's the other one...
I'm An Old Cowhand (From The Rio Grande)
I'm an old cowhand from the Rio Grande But my legs ain't bowed, and my cheeks ain't tan Well I'm a cowboy who never saw a cow Never roped a steer 'cause I don't know how And I sure ain't fixin' to startin now Oh, yippee-i-o-ki-ay, yippee-i-o-ki-ay
I'm an old cowhand from the Rio Grande And I learned to ride before I learned to stand Well I'm a ridin fool who is up to date I know every trail in the Lone Star State 'Cause I ride the range in a Ford V-8 Oh, yippee-i-o-ki-ay, yippee-i-o-ki-ay
Look out, I'm gonna show y'all how to ride now Here we go
I'm an old cowhand from the Rio Grande And I come to town just to hear the band I know all the songs that the cowboys know 'Bout the big corral where the dogies go 'Cause I learned them all on the radio Oh, yippee-i-o-ki-ay, yippee-i-o-ki-ay
Now my story's almost done, so listen up! You ain't got much longer now
I'm an old cowhand from the Rio Grande Where the west is wild round the borderland Where the buffalo roam around the zoo And the indian make you a rug or two And the old Bar-X is the Bar-be-cue Oh, yippee-i-o-ki-ay, yippee-i-o-ki-ay
I'm just an old cowhand...

Promontory Rider, Territory Ranger. Promontory Rider, whats makes you ride so high? Put a loving star back in an empty sky. Once the wind was warm and sweet, the ladies in lace. Up there on the prominence the tears just freeze your face. From a statutory picture, passport out of hell. Left here by a stranger, seem to wish as well. Sighed, Promontory Rider, Territory Ranger.
Asked me, "Can you thread a needle? Can you shoot the moon?" Walk the silver screen, be a judgement at high noon? Like any Promontory Rider, Territory Ranger, step up.
Ride on, ride on, ride Ride upon the high ground, ride upon the low. Promontory Rider what makes you ride so slow? Pick me out with harden wings and fill my head with crowds. I been crawlin' in this scene, but now I'm rollin' down.
Promontory Rider, Territory Ranger. Promontory Rider used to ride so high. I don't know these days just seem to ride on by. Once the wind was warm and sweet, but this must be your place. Cause you don't change this chilly range, for any other place. Say, Promontory Rider, Territory Ranger.
Ride on, ride on, ride. Promontory Rider, whats makes you ride so high? Put a loving star back in an empty sky. Movin' on the high ground, movin' on the low. But Promontory Rider that was many years ago. Pick me out with harden wings and fill my head with crowds. I been crawlin' in this scene, but not I'm rollin' down. Promontory Rider, Territory Ranger.
Movin' on the high ground, movin' on the low ground. Promontory Rider step so high I know I oculd be right and I maybe wrong. But I'll think I'll miss you when your gone. ABC WXYZ can ask for cover, just don't see me

this is the shroomery. confusing sentences where you dont really seem to understand what the poster is trying to get across isn't uncommon here.

And entirely irrelevant to the thread.
Ed Bruce
This is the last cowboy song the end of a hundred year waltz Voices sound sad as they're singing along another piece of America's lost
He rides a feed lot and clerks in a market on weekends selling tobacco and beer His dreams of tomorrow surrounded by fences But he'll dream tonight of when fences weren't here He blazed the trail with Lewis and Clark And eyeball to eyeball Ol' Wyatt backed down He stood shoulder to shoulder with Travis in Texas And rode with the Seventh when Custer went down This is the last cowboy song...
Remington showed us how he looked on canvas And Louie L'Amore has told us his tale And Willie and Waylon and me sing about him And wish to God we could have ridden his trail
The Old Chisholm Trail is covered in concrete now And they truck 'em to market in fifty foot rigs They blow by his marker never slowing to read Like living and dying was all he did This is the last cowboy song... This is the last cowboy song...
This is the last cowboy song...
