New Shmoopy $25,000 challenge

It has been a while since we had a challenge and due to inflation, the prize is now $25,000 instead of $20,000. Yay!
All one has to do is to prove to me that they can distinguish an Enlightened Master from a Wise Old Man.
I eagerly await the non-participants.

I wouldn't distinguish... if I can tell somebody has something to teach me, I will learn.

an Enlightened Master from a Wise Old Man.
An enlightened master is a new age term and a wise old man has a patina.
You can PM me for my address. And just in time for Xmas.

It seems like simply a difference of degree. Like distinguishing white from off-white.
I wonder if anyone would take up the $10,000 challenge in my sig.
Disclaimer: I don't actually have $10,000 to put up. You'll have to talk to the late Robert Anton Wilson. I wish you luck in finding a good medium to channel his spirit.

The only difference I can perceive is: You can ALWAYS find someone wiser and older than yourself.
"Enlightened" Shmoopy, is PAST TENSE... as in it already happened.
Show me a person who is, "Enlightened" in all ways.
Sure you can always find someone MORE enlightened than yourself... but completely, "Enlightened"? In all ways? Like a Jack-Buddhist uses the word? I don't believe it is possible.

For once I agree with you orgone. Enlightenment is largely a term of social status in my opinion.
But maybe enlightenment is a term that denotes a finality, whereas wisdom really has either no limit, or is limited by the finality of enlightenment.

Well, I assume you have some particular definition of 'normal' right?
I would define 'normal' to be something that happens most the time. Well over fifty percent of the time. For example if I let go of a rock without pushing it, it falls to the earth. If I show that to you, I have demonstrated something normal. If the sun rises in the morning, that is something normal.
Im not up on philosophers specific definitions. What does 'normal' mean in philosophy?

I am no expert, but it would appear that the "wise old man" is more wrinkly but knows the time, and the "enlightened master" adorns himself with make-up and accessories....

Almost all accounts of the Buddha described him as giving off a sort of inner light and radiating with serenity. I think this is probably why most people's reaction to the "Enlightened Master" is that he can't be trusted, because these qualities can be (and often are) convincingly aped by hollow men.

Well I'm not attempting to prove anything, but an enlightened master can read your mind and tell you things about your past, while a wise old man cannot.

Bullshit.
First, show me an enlightened master.
Second... what do you think wisdom is?
Wisdom is when someone old (or vastly experienced) uses their combined, world knowledge in order to come to the correct conclusion during a given situation... EVEN WHEN THEY DON'T HAVE ALL THE FACTS.
It looks like magic... but it is not. Like all REAL magic, mind reading is just an illusion.
What you perceive as mind reading (perhaps from a great martial arts instructor... or something) is not really mind reading at all... it just seems like it is.
It really is something FAR more important. What you mistake for mind reading is simple OBSERVATION. An observant man can predict your thoughts. It is why we play poker. And it is why some people practice arts such as Tai-Chi.
Wisdom, not SPIRITuality, is the path to enlightenment.
Awareness is the path to wisdom.
If you REALLY want to chase a dragon, try heroin... it is cheaper, and it works fast.

How can you say "Bullshit"? It must be nice to be SO sure of yourself.
Open your mind and heart if you want to meet a master, "when the student is ready the teacher appears."
I guess you've never had a guy tell you something specific about your past, like "You killed a bear cub when you were 11."
There are many stories like this, like when Ram Dass' guru mentioned his mother's spleen...

I say bullshit because you are not correct.
Middleman, I have had enough, "Masters" (from MANY faiths and many paths) read my mind... to begin to learn the, "trick" myself.
I know, this lesson can be a bit like learning there is no Santa Claus... in your 20's... but I am not lying.
Stories are stories. They serve their purpose, but they are all just stories. Stories live in the mind... and not the real world. Stories are the past.
Trust me, I KNOW stories. Stories get better with age.
Show me an enlightened man.
Until you do, the, "Bullshit" stands.
It is not wise to mistake the wise for the enlightened. Look at what happened to Jesus!
I'd LOVE to be proven wrong... but yeah, I'm pretty sure of myself. It IS quite nice. Thank you.
I never killed that bear cub... I SWEAR!

*Van Praagh to American parents of dead child doing a cold-reading*
VP: I am sensing some sort of Disney connection. Did your child have some sort of a Disney toy; perhaps a Mickey Mouse or a Donald Duck watch or plate or doll?
Parents: Um, no.
VP: Well, it is there. Perhaps you went to Disneyland?
Parents: (Uncomfortable) Never.
VP: Drove by or near a Disneyland?
Parents: Don't think so.
VP: Really? Never went to Florida or California?
Parents: Well, when Sharon was pregnant we flew to Miami to see her parents.
VP: BINGO!
Parents: Wow! Very impressive!

Ask him flat out, "What are you?"
-------------------- So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.
