Diploid's 2012 Challenge
    #4374115 - 07/06/05 01:04 AM (11 years, 9 months ago)

In the grand tradition of James Randi (and our own Swami) I propose the following challenge:

I'll put up $10,000 against any True Believer's $1,000 betting that nothing special will happen by January 1, 2013.

That's 10 to 1 odds, and the sum involved (only $1000 for the True Believer) is certainly within reach of anyone who can afford an Internet connection. If I win, I keep your $1,000; if you win, you get my $10,000.

So what say you? Does anyone here have the conviction of belief to put their money where their mouth is?

Republican Values:

1) You can't get married to your spouse who is the same sex as you.
2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child.
3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

"Special" is relative.  If I can be the judge looks like I just made 10 grand.

The details will be spelled out in writing, in advance and agreed to by both parties in such a way as to leave no room for interpretation. This should be easy to do since every 2012 proponent I've ever run into has made up a very specific scenario for what will happen.

The final judgment will be made by a neutral third party chosen in advance and acceptable to both the claimant and me.

This isn't rocket science. Any takers?

Do hundreds or thousands of doomsday cults and all sorts of New Age freaks running around screaming and wreaking havoc count as "special"?

Nah, it has to be something that they don't normally do to qualify.

Oh, the New-Agers will just claim something intangible and unprovable happened like a "Universal Consciousness Shift" or some other mumbo-jumbo and claim they were right....

I, as the obvious choice for an impartial judge, will not allow such claims to stand. For my services I request a 10% cut of whatever sum is claimed by the victorious party.

I remember hearing from several sources that the Mayan calendar actually ends December 21st, 2012. So you might need to adjust your challenge.

Which makes your choice automatically biased towards the 2012ers.

So...
1. Someone takes the bet.
2. World ends.
3. You're both dead.

OR

1. Someone takes the bet.
2. World doesn't end.
3. You get a bunch of money.

I like the way you think.
This is assuming of course that the "special" event kills everyone, but most hypotheses I've heard would either result in mass-death or something that would make money useless anyway.

*chuckle* I was wondering how long it would take somebody to notice the safety net on this bet.

Momma Diploid didn't raise no dummies!

On the other hand, lots of 2012ers don't claim the end of the world. Some claim we'll meet the Reptilian Masters of the Univers, the Global Conciousness will become evident, the Schumann Frequency will change, Earth will bump into the Photon Belt, bla, bla, bla...

Yep... that is pretty much what I hear as well. I try to keep an open mind about most things, but the world ending or anything special happening because an ancient culture died out before they had need to expand their calendar is pushing the bounds of credibility.
