Madness
    #7488466 -

God is mad.

If you are ready to be a little mad, only then is there any possibility of any contact between you and the infinite.
It has to be so.
When the whole ocean drops into a drop, the drop is going to get crazy.
When the infinite descends into the finite, how can the finite remain sane?
It has to go mad.
The old mystics have always called it
"THE DIVINE MADNESS"
All meditation is an approach towards divine madness.
Stake all human sanity.
It is better to be mad in a divine way than to be sane in a human way.
I am crazy.

Is madness something that can be avoided when one is on the path to becoming?

It's all relative.

The way to not be mad is to not take yourself too seriously, I gather.
To allow yourself to laugh at the little stuff.
Lie on your back and feel yourself breathe, feel your inner body. It's all good.
"This too shall pass."
Read a book.
That kind of thing.

I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

Sometimes the lack of seriousness just adds to the madness.

I just might agree with this.

Madness is avoided by refraining from indulging in self-importance. If you don't take yourself too seriously then not much could drive you mad.

No not much could drive you mad.

Although, there will always be those who judge my lack of seriousness.

some really smart people can avoid going mad by stumbling around like idiots until their senses return

but then they gotta watch people die like flowers
and thats enough to make anyone mad
esepcially when your potential date sprays nature's pesticide on you
"ooooh yeah, reallly? oooh yeah!"
come on people, look at your fucking watches

in my opinion, madness is trying to comprehend infinity
trying to resolve the ultimate paradoxes

... trying to transcend by piling dualities on dualities, as if you could pile them so high they could act as a pyramid to something single and pure

that is exactly the way i feel

"Someone has said that the meditation we are doing here seems to be sheer madness. It is. And it is that way for a purpose. It is madness with a method; it is consciously chosen.

Remember, you cannot go mad voluntarily. Madness takes possession of you. Only then can you go mad. If you go mad voluntarily, that's a totally different thing. You are basically in control, and one who can control even his madness will never go mad.
"

When I first became detached from my thought process on acid I thought I had entered infinity, each second felt like hours.  The moment seemed to have no end.  That is why I like this -

When the whole ocean drops into a drop, the drop is going to get crazy.
When the infinite descends into the finite, how can the finite remain sane?

It reminds me of going back into the world after these experiences, with a heightened awareness of my attachment to thought process.  How caught up in my ego I was prior to the experience, how caught up in it I am now, and how I can change that.

What I like most about my OP is how he wasn't afraid to say he is mad, he says it so humorously.  i think fear has a lot to do with madness, and how seriously we take it.

It depends on what you can handle IMO. If you are willing to ditch your relative sanity I think that, for instance, psychedelics can offer you a lot more than if not. You've gotta be willing to be a little crazy in order to understand the utter craziness that drives existence. All that aside I think going a little crazy is pretty healthy actually. It's something innate in us, part of out true animal nature, that we repress because we're "civilized".

If we don't know the truth, how do we know we are actually sane anyway? Given the way things could conceivably be, we could look hilariously pathetic and insane right now.

LSD made me realize how insane I must look from a standpoint of objective awareness most of the time. I am often totally insane. I often walk around looking at people and buildings and cars and birds as if I'm expecting to gain something from them that will finally make me happy and at peace; having conversations where I tell stories about myself, relate my 'opinions' about things like sports teams or my professors or the weather; feeling as though these stories and opinions are who I am; etc. Like Tim Leary said, "insane robots living in boxes".
