While hunting for Saffron Milk Caps and Slippery Jacks for an evening cook-up, lucked onto these little gems this arvo in a mixed pine/eucalypt forest near Daylesford Victoria.

Whaddaya think?...Make a nice dessert perhaps? :smile:

I went back to my hunting grounds after 10 days today and found a heap of immature subs popping up absolutely everywhere... I thought I'd leave them and come back later next week when they've grown and had a chance to release their spores so the patch doesn't die for next year. 15 minutes later I saw some imbecile come and take them all. You idiot! No wonder subs in that patch never get a chance to fully mature. Hopefully the ones this nut took had a chance to drop some spores. Hell, the mushrooms weren't even half open. Idiot.

Excuse me, I'm new to all this. Besides, I was told that if you want a positive ID for any fungi, you need the whole lot of the fruiting body - including stem and base of stem.

wd scrays those are definitely subs :thumbup:

went for my second hunt this year at my usual spot and found about a hundred or so. this time last year i found thousands in the same spot. it still seems too dry which is weird coz it has been raining quite a bit. anyone elses patches still relatively dry?

btw this is out bush in the south west of melbourne. there is less rain out there than in the east but i still wouldve thought it had had enough by now.

hey relax scray he's just tryin to help you out. besides the fact that your post didn't indicate you needed an i.d, you shouldn't need to rip up the mycelium to get an i.d.

And yeah in future you dont need to pull them out from the base for a positive ID. As long as there is bluing on the stem you should be rite but if you want to make sure do a spore print

Scrays - Dont stress champ we all have to learn, but if you cut them, then they will grow again and spread there spores, so its in your best interests so you can have your own little patch.

Gdowg, i dont even remember mammoth subs from 05.

Scrays like others said use scissors, no big dramas that you didnt though. Just sever the stem bases and use them to inoculate w.chips in other areas, if you haven't already. Pulling them out from the base-up does disturb the myc though, but a couple here and there would be more benefical if you get other places fruiting.

looks like a good pick there batchsaid nice n blue..looks like u would ge a nice dark spore rint too =] and with drying, i tend to leave them in a draw on newspaper...at normal temerature..not where it is too warm and thats works for me.. here is a couple of my finds today =]

This is the first season I have been hunting and have been virtually all round the South/East of Melbourne no luck yet! but I will keep trying!

I think I have a good idea of what I'm looking for (P.sub) but few brief newb questions if you please: should the stem of a Sub be brittle (ie snap when you try to bend it), or soft and juicy? Also should it be hollow? And when you say the gills should not be attached is this absolute? ie. no gills touching stem?

I have been hunting exhaustively and id hate to find some and not be able to correctly ID them.

The gills should be attached, but only to the top of the stem, not running down too far. The best way to ID is look for caramel coloured caps, pure white stems (with a little brown discoloration sometimes) and small BLUE streaks on the stem or on the cap.
