Once you find your first few, you will be surprised how much they actually stand out. To the untrained eye its just another brown mushroom but when you hunt em for a while, the minute you see their cap (for me anyway) you know you've found the goods.

I always lay them out then just blow a fan onto them. I need to do this 'undercover' so I turn the fan on overnight, then when I wake up next morning I tuck them away, and then fan them again teh next night. Two or three nights normally does the trick for me (it's only a little fan, and it of course depends how many I've got.

Air drying never really gets them dry enough... I always find the bigs start coming out in force before they are properly dried. Nothing I hate more than those fucking bugs.

If you've got a small fan and you're worried about people seeing a table top full of drying mushrooms, try this:

Get a big tub for about $8 from a cheapo chop.
Get some damp-rid
Put your mushies on a tray or a strainer in the bottom of the tub.
Stick your fan in the tub, facing down over the mushies (Probably need to put the fan on its side to fit it).
Stick your damp rid box in there somewhere.
Close up the tub. (the plastic is usually malleable enough that it can close over the wire from the fan)
Turn on the fan.
Wait over night and i can guarantee those mushies will be dried to a crisp.

The tub silences the fan and the whole thing is pretty inconspicuous in a garage or something. The combination of fan, sealed air and desiccant dries full fresh subs to dust in a day.

I went for a bit of a walk today and came across these. They look like subs to me. I have an immature fruit (veil was still unbroken) that I'm going to get a spore print from if they're indeed subs.

Would appreciate confirmation of ID please dudes!

Yep, subs for sure dude. Just a note, (which you will read commonly on this message board) if you cut the shrooms at the base of the stem with scissors of a stanley knife, the mycelium is less disturbed and is able to produce for fruits better.

Thanks DaddySmurf. I know about the leaving mycelium undisturbed and you'll notice I only took 1 that way - I will utilise it for propagation of some further woodchips.:thumbup:

Hey guys, this is my first post and i just wanna say that you guys are doing a mad job. You have helped me so much I've had a few minor hunts around school (I'm a boarder) but only inactives so far - or at least I think. I'll keep trying. Anyway thanks again.

Found these babies randomly in a nice little pot plant, I'm almost certain they are the real deal.

Nah man, they aren't subs and in fact id almost say they are a Galerina. They have a distinct rusty brown stem in the second photo and i can see a partial veil. All signs that its a Galerina. Do not eat.

Apologies Oosi, i had my o's mixed up and it was actually _OttO_ from W.A who found the massive subs in 05.

Rocked up to my patch today only to find a bunch of people with scissors. at first didn't mind, said hi, good luck and the rest, but then I looked round a saw they had left nothing, not even the little tiny ones. Was a bit disappointed at this but I thought I’d just get some from the other less productive patch I had found. When I got there same thing had happened. Everything gone. I was so, so utterly sad. Now me and my friends will have no mushrooms this week. It’s just gonna break their harts.

Finally found my first subs! So happy I wanna cry!

It really is how everyone has been saying, once you find them they look really obvious.

I think, for any noobies (like me) try looking in suburban tan-barked area, this is where I had my luck.

And shit, it only makes sense to use scissors and not take the little babies. If not to be unselfish, then at least to give yourself a better chance of finding more next time.

jiv tree nice find mate:thumbup: But I think when you say tan bark you are talking about woodchip mulch. Tan bark is that dark coloured pine bark that you often see in landscaped areas. Ive never found  subs growing on that stuff.
