Coming out to parents
    #6884582 -

How did you deal with telling your parents about your use of psychedelics?
I've been thinking about this and I really have no idea about how to do this, cause I think they will go ballistic and that I don't even get a chance to come with arguments.
So I'd like to know how some of you guys did this.:)

Don't, until you're completely on your own and supporting yourself. Then its a matter of them either loving you for who you have grown up to be or disowning you.

While under their roof, I feel they don't need to know, especially if they react as many have been conditioned to. It's unneeded trouble for everyone.

Mine actually came unplanned. For some stupid reason I won't go into now, I confided in my sister. She's a very liberal person normally but about this she just flipped. Much drama ensued. Epic scale. So I wound up confiding in my mom in order to help moderate the issue. I chose her because she's done plenty of drugs in her life, including a good amount of acid. She doesn't condone it but doesn't judge either.

More than a year later it's somewhat still stressful with my sister, but we've pretty much agreed to just not ever talk about it.

I would probably never, ever tell my dad (maybe on his deathbed (or mine, heh)). Despite his own past drug use, he's very conservative and highly judgmental. Telling your parents is a risky proposition and should only be done after you've had a chance to ask yourself why you want to tell them. What does it gain for you or for them? It may cause more harm than good.

Hope that helps.

They knew I smoked bud, asked me one day I'd ever tripped (I forget how it came up exactly), and, well......I'd only done it once at this time, but it was full blown; I melted into eternity and was reborn, and knew immediately that it's a wonderful thing. So no way was  I going to deny something so beautiful. They were pissed at first, but after awhile and many conversations about it, they finally came to accept it, though they still aren't happy about it. My parents saw me go through a lot of shit, including heroin addiction, and they know that it was LSD that got me off that, and back on the right path, so......

Think long and hard about your beliefs, make sure you'll be able to articulate yourself well and give sources as well as facts before you do this.

Good luck!

Yeah I forgot to mention that. Never tell them if you're currently dependent upon them in any financial way. There is just too much more stress involved there. Parents will react differently to something like that if they feel like you're maybe acting out against them or taking for granted what they're providing. If you're earning your own way they will take that as a sign that maybe your drug use isn't such a crisis.

First off, like people have already said in this thread - if you are not independent, do not tell them about your fancy for the psychedelic side of life. Because it is their right to exercise their power over you if they want to, whether or not you like it. You need to tell them when you're in a position that puts your life decisions in your own hands entirely.

I am dying to tell my mother about my psychedelic side...but I don't want to do it until I have creative success to show for it.

Secondly, think about your parents and not just yourself when you decide to tell them. Do you think it will benefit them, and your relationship, if you tell them? Is your relationship with them suffering because they don't know? If you think there's a chance it will make things worse rather than better, sometimes ignorance is bliss.

Depends what your parents are like. They're usually never please, but if you're out on your own I'd suggest just one day mentioning it. It'll be a big load off your chest.

I don't even know how the hell it came up but at some point or another while in a conversation with my dad I blurted out that I had dropped acid a few times. They've known that I smoke for about 2 years now so I don't think it came as a huge surprise. Both my parents had done their fair share of "experimenting" so they kinda knew what was going on.

Nothing really bad came out of it, I pretty much got the same story I got about going out drinking, don't be doing it all the time and if I'm ever fucked up don't go anywhere near a car, no matter what I'm on or where I'm at don't be afraid to call for a ride because they would rather pick me up tripping my ass off than pick me up at the morgue.

One day before heading to a party my mom told me to stay out of trouble. For no reason I asked her why did she say that, she took me to my room and showed me where I had hidden my stash, that I didn't even remembered. I had a beautiful gram of mazar weed there. She asked me if I have done anything else besides pot, I told her that I have done and surely will do every now and then some other dope, but I'm no way going to abuse anything. I explained her my view of drugs and abusing them in general. She seemed to be cool with it and because she's interested in psychedelic lifestyle too she wanted to try some pot too and now I've smoked 4 times with her. She's helping me to take care of my salvia plant and after announcing my plan of getting a peyote cacti soon, she was ok with it as well.

Uh, my parents and I have a dont ask dont tell policy. We understand what goes on in each others lives to a point, but we dont dig deep. As I came into adulthood we became pretty good friends though. If the subject ever came up, I wouldnt have a problem talking about it, and i am sure I wouldnt be condemned. However, its really not something Im just going to bring up when I go visit with my wife for dinner.

Ended up having an interesting conversation one night about psychedelics, drugs, and dealing with my IN-LAWS once though....it went well, and I think it some how opened up the relationship between us. Sure was awkward at the time though

Keeping things quiet is a good idea like everyone is saying.

I have one of the most open-minded moms out there (or so i thought). I always thought that if i she found out, id be able to reason with her by laying down the facts. Now that she has, i see that i was wrong.

She too has done drugs in the past and therefore thinks she knows whats up. However her experiences were very limited, and entirely negative. (no psychedelics besides what seems to have been shitty pot, and a handful of i.v. uses - prepared by acquaintances. one of which nearly killed her)

Its interesting how she believes that going to the jungles of Mexico on a proper native-guided shroom journey would be fine, and spiritually beneficial (as we've has talks about before). But doing psychedelics on my own, no matter how seriously i take them, or don't, is strictly wrong. Because clearly there is no way i can fully know what i'm doing. When you try to explain things to her, demonstrating extensive knowledge and understanding of what exactly i'm doing - she says thats wrong too. Being informed on the subject of drugs is wrong....lol. Not to mention that she calls all drugs including psychs' 'narcotics' (shes Russian), thinks you can o.d. on Shrooms, and that LSD damages your brain - - which naturally bugs the crap out of me. Lets not even touch upon other drug classes.

Long rant made short... Play it safe and dont come clean until you move out. Its obvious that no matter how open-minded the parents seem, they more then likely hold sertain dogmas that have been ingrained in them all their life.

Perhaps if they just ate some shrooms? ;p

Some things are better left untold, a subject like this could damage your relationship with your parents, and they might not allow you to see it but it would always be in the back of their minds, if you must tell them like others have said it would be best to tell them when you are out from under their roof supporting yourself.

Remember we are from a different generation with a different thought process, reasoning and influences.

And not everyone from our parents generation were flower children dropping acid on grassy hill sides, and even if they were, their views on psychedelics could have drastically changed over the years.

and until you are a old man/woman and have children of your own your views might be very different on how you think of psychedelics now.

As I said before some things are better left untold, if you really have to question doing it then that means deep down inside you know it could come out for the worse?

Just my perception on things take it or shun it:thumbup:

Why do you want to tell them? I come from a conservative Catholic household and I do have family members who have abused drugs in the past. I in no way see myself going down that path preferring to do pot and shrooms every once in awhile. I'm fully aware that my family would not approve/understand and so see no reason to tell them. As mentioned I think it could potentially ruin my relationship with them, but it all depends entirely on what kind of relationship you currently have them. If you're able to confide something like in your parents, well, I envy you.

Well, my mother is pretty strict, but when she found out i smoked pot, she just told me it was a bad thing and that i better never do it again. my friends mother however, was upset when he was caught smoking. she only told him to wait until he moved out to continue doing it. it really depends on how your parents are about these things. if things go really bad, just compare it to other drugs that more people are into that are worse for you (such as cocaine, meth, or heroine).
hope this helped  :chillpill: .
