Melbourne season * 2
    #6727023 -

I know it's way too early yet, but we've had a couple of days of good rain here in Melbourne.

To my surprise I found a non-active growing out of some wood chips in my backyard the other day.

Has anybody started looking yet? And if so, found anything?

You said it - way too early. That rain we've had hasn't done a thing out my way - I'm out and about often and it is as dry as a bone...

Im preparing to go have a quick look within the next 3-4 days. Dont expect to find much, but i wouldn't mind seeing if some mycelium has started to form at my usual patches.

If the temps decrease and the rain keeps up, im betting people will be finding something mid april.

Yea i rkn this rain is good for getting things started but its still a while off. I remember the first day i found anything last year was april 28. It is wetter already that it was at the end of april last year so i think thats a good sign. but as i recall its not just rain and cold that make them grow its also trees and plants giving off a certain signal to the soil if im not mistaken. Anyways i rkn late april would be the best time to start going by the last few years.

Hey all, I'm back for another season!

I agree with moshroom that late April is the very earliest we will see anything in Melbourne. Hopefully if the rain picks up we'll be lucky! Worse case scenerio I somehow get my two 1000 litre water tanks from home into my van and start watering the usual patches myself.

Anyway I'll be back when I have some good news to report.

Did a 20k walk north east of Melbourne today. Some of the gullies were suprisingly wet and green (out north west is dry as a bone) - any number of inactives around. I'll have another look out that way when the temperature drops...

Well I don't live in Melbourne, I live out in Gippsland and I'm finding hundreds of inactives. The patches are that big that I can see them clearly while driving/riding.

What I was wondering was, do the inactives start popping up before the actives? Because I drove past a paddock with some cows in it today and saw HEAPS of mushrooms growing in the manure. But from what every one says, it's too early for them to be actives.

We get a bit more rain out here as well, plus it's slightly colder. Would there be any point of me going out looking for actives yet?

yea i find about now all the inactives popup but the actives will start around the end of april. I have 1 big inactive in my garden that started growing 2 days ago. they always grow there this time of year and about 3 weeks later the actives come. that how i know when its time.

Might be just me over here in SA, but while Autumns well and truly settling in, a lot of the late summer flowers seem to be a bit late this year, like 2 weeks to a month later, possibly from the lack of rain, forecast is for a big wet May though, so that should kick off the season if its not going beforehand.

General time for a walk around is the week after the first big winter downpour which usually occurs around anzac day.

Side note, does anyone know how the drought conditions we've had will affect the mycelium, and will there be less mushrooms around due to the stress, or is it dormant for long periods over summer. My thinking is if it can survive a long period of drought then there will be an abundance of fruiting when conditions are right due to a survival mechanism to breed and recolonize areas.

I like how you know when it's time, when all the leaves have fallen off one of the trees in my front yard I know it's time.

IMO:
The drought has already affected the mycelium, as the drought was brought on by El Nino from 2002-early 2007 (presently over, for now). So the stresses would have affected already in the years of the drought. I think mycelium does go dormant, but the longer its dormant the less its going to colonize.
