Whilst im no mycologist, im fairly confident in my ability to ID Australian actives, at the very least, P.Subaeruginosa. Once you find more and more the differences between subs and poisonous lookalikes become quite obvious.

Howdy everyone, I'm new here and know absolutly nothing about mushrooms (i know, every posters living hell) i'm from the eastern inner suburbs and hope to find some shrooms this season. I've read all your hints and tips and am relativly confident that I know where to search..hopefully i can find someone to come out hunting with me.

If you want a hunting buddy, ask in the gathering forum. If not, just post your finds with the relevant info and someone here will ID them for you. Obviously dont consume anything until you have a 100% positive ID.

I'm sick of these 'Official Melbourne threads'

Why not "official Australian P. subaeruginosa threads?"
i think i had the same argument a couple of years back

Moderately temped Southern Aus. has a lot to offer this forum, not just Melbourne.

Nah dude, P. Australiana is just a sub-variant of P. Subaeruginosa.

In a nutshell, they are the same mushroom.

I haven't seen "bluemeanie" post on here for a while, but he knows a ton about mushrooms in Australia, maybe he can shed some more light on it.

Yes but this is a very positive start, 5mm of rain in the last 2 hours or so is the best rain we have had for a while. The min temperatures have been dipping below 10c o/night a few times recently too. The day time temperatures and clear sunny dry days are the biggest problem. I think we need some really cold nights and morning frosts to shock the myc into fruiting. However the shrooms will struggle to grow with the day time temps, unless they are well shaded such as under bushes and native grasses or on the south side of a wall/fence.

My backyard is going really well in terms of Myc growth but no sign of fruiting yet due to the temp I believe. However the amount of Myc I have going and the density of it is quite amazing. This is because that area of garden has been getting our gray water for the last few months so it hasn't been effected by the dry weather. The other bonus to my patches location is that its on the south side of our house and only gets a short glimpse of sun of no more than an hour a day. I just really want the damn temps to drop ffs. When I saw the forecast for next week I could have cried.

I have been considering some options to get around the temp problem and trigger fruiting. Since I know the Myc is strong and fat and the position of the patch is perfect in terms of shade and is almost always holding moisture.

The best Idea I can think of is to pour a couple of buckets of Ice over the patch a couple of nights in a row to shock it into fruiting. As I am confident that its position will protect the fruit as it grows.

Anyone think that might work?

Just wait man, providing we get more rain and a decent drop in temps you will be finding some decent fruits within 3 weeks i'd say. Last year i found my first pins in the first week of May, so rather than stuff around with putting ice on the patch i would just wait....

And anyway, i doubt ice would do much. Its the ground temerature that matters. A bit of ice on top of a garden bed wont do much in terms of cooling the ground down. Thats what 6-7 degree minimums are for

I can wait. I don't eat shrooms anyway I just like to collect a few pounds dry each winter to give away.

I think that a couple of bags of Ice from the servo put down overnight would drop the ground temperature a fair bit considering the melt would be seeping through to the Myc and would be very cold... The Myc is also breaking through the mulch in places that are protected by grass and shrub foliage and is as close to the surface it will get in the areas that aren't sheltered. It's a very visible patch of Myc so I am excited about its health.

As I said above, rainfall/water isnt an issue due to the gray water that gets dumped over the garden bed the patch is in nearly every day or two. I am yet to see what effect gray water will have on the final result, however the Myc seems to have had no problems dealing with it. The way that its shaded means that the patch stays moist almost constantly and has done for over a month now. Really its only the ground temperature thats holding it back imo.

I might take advantage of the next couple of nights as they look like they are going to be a fair bit colder than the last weeks. I will Ice a section of the patch and see if it makes a difference or triggers fruiting faster than the rest.

Thats a photo of the Myc thats spread down amongst the rocks of the retaining wall, its absolutely everywhere under and in between the rocks.

This is a pic of some of the Myc thats grown under the foliage of the grass.

Notice the dates on the photo's, they are 3 weeks old, the Myc has spread even more since then. I will post new pics when I take some.

Point taken, man. I just started the thread to see if anybody in Melb had started looking yet or found anything.

But yeah, we should start an Official Australia thread.
