Is laziness genetic or cultural?

For those of you who will ask, here is how I am defining laziness:

not inclined to work or be active, slow/sluggish

Hmm... you can say laziness is genetic but one can't know exactly how much if it really comes from genes and how much much of it is imprinted by the education a child gets or the examples he's given... which brings us to the cultural aspect as well.
Besides that, from what I've noticed, laziness can occur later in one's life too, due to traumas, depressions, unhealthy life style ( all of them creating fear which in it's turn can manifest in laziness too - so fear plays a big role too ).
My thought are that very few people are actually born lazy because it looks more likely to be a result of happenings in life.

It might have something to do with metabolism. I think it might have more to do with one's childhood. If a child is stimulated and encouraged to play outdoors, ride bikes, climb trees, help clean around the house, etc. etc. etc. then this child will naturally be an active individual. One simply needs to activate. :grin:

If someone was being lazy I'd say "get the fuck off your ass and start running!".  :whip:

I mean, I'm sitting around chilling right now, but I've already performed for the majority of my day. There is a difference between relaxation and being lazy. I'll admit that I'm very much a procrastinator. I'm working on it. :smirk:

I would concur with Mushroom trip about it being both. I have seen some people with everything pretty much handed to them, including intellect, wealth and stamina, who merely get stoned all day and fail to pursue a meaningful trade or career.

I have known other people who literally fail at even the most basic of everyday tasks genetic diseases despite their their being highly intelligent and having a strong sense of ambition.

In all probability though they interact. Even people who are lazy for cultural reasons are probably just people who are genetically predisposed into accepting the culture more readily then others.

Yup... I can see where you're getting to.
But then again... I saw lazy-ass people that were like that till the day they were born ( so one could argue about some "lazy genes" there )... BUT then something happened... like they found something they were really interested in and gave them the motivation to change and become very active.

If it were genetic, I can't see how it could be overcome. Yet in my own personal experience, I have overcome my lazy inclinations by strengthening my willpower.
