undiscovered schitzophrenia
    #6509741 -

lately ive been wondering if its possible if schitzophrenia could appear in someone who has no family with any history of mental illness. (nothing remotely like schitzophrenia anyways.) ive noticed that the past few trips ive had with lsd involved i seem to feel crazy, as in talking to myself(in my head), and just feeling confused most of the time.

im am 20 years old, and as ive read these would be the years of my life that the disease would probably appear if i had it.

is it possible to have this without any family history whatsoever?
please respond if you have any input on anything ive said.

thanks in advance

Yeah its possible just like anything. One thing to remember though is that psychedelic drugs were thought to be psycho mimetic in the 60s, or that they induce psychosis in those who take them, albeit temporarily. Get used to it, acid and other psychedelics do this. However it is up to you to call the feelings skitzo or whatever. Many labels fit many things.

Dude... Like mecreateme said... Shrooms et. al are supposed to induce a temporary state of psychosis/schizophrenia. So feeling like you're schizophrenic while tripping makes sense. Try lowering the dose if it's bothering you too much.

As I recently told a friend... Psychosis: A fun place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.

On another note... Schizophrenia can onset as late as 20.

Every time you trip is a chance for something new to happen. Many times episodes play out over many trips in a persons life. You are starting to feel some of the real effects of psychedelics(which are not all cake and punch if you know what I mean), roll with them and try and learn something.

Most people with schizophrenia have no family history (formally or full diagnosis criteria at least).

All mental illnesses can't simply have a cut off line. They are all on a continuum of perception and weighting of thought, but towards a certian end, especially if it effects your life dramatically or in a negative way.

Psychedelics do seem to have some similarities with schizophrenia, especially in terms of loosening of association, referencing etc, let alone hallucinations.
Psychedelics touch on the old madness/genius thing.

What you describe sounds like normal tripping.

Problematic or indicative signs of 'illness' to look out for include very dramatic reactions, about dose taken, (and replicable incidences of this phenomenen), as well as enduring effects beyond usual drug effects.

Its funny to see posts like this. Listen, if you are schitzo, you arent sitting around worried you are schitzo.

Psychedelics, and expecially pot, seem to make people scared they are going to go schitzo at any moment. I have friends that swear up and down they have mild schitzophrenia....BS...they smoke to much weed and are just paranoid.

Don't self diagnose, if you are worried go see a psych. No shame in that.

I would love the oppertunity to be schitzo...ive talked to my psychology professors before and they all would say if they could they would be schizo locked away in a room somewhere...I told them to take lsd (most of them did anyways). Seriously, dont fear something like schitzo, and if you are truly worried then go seek medical help.

Sometimes when I smoke weed I feel like I'm going insane, but that's just caused from "over thinking" about anything at all. Just sit back and relax.

put it this way if your schtizo then the episodes will continue days after the trip, if you come back to "normal" the next day you should be good, but that doesnt mean that something can't happen

If you are schitzo, you dont feel "abonormal" you feel like everything is ok. Thats why someone sitting around smoking a blunt worried about being schitzo isnt. When you can tell the thoughts you are having arent "right" then you arent schitzo, its when those thoughts start becomming who you are and you dont even realize that what you think is completely illogical. Paranoid /= paranoid schitzo

i can't really agree with you on that. i have a friend who is fucked in the head. she was always fucked in the head, but ok. but using lsd or mushrooms as not helped and actually just sped the process up. you are right though, if you can't handle smoking herb than you can't handle anything heavier. what i'm trying to say is the fucked up mind might not know its fucked up.

What I am saying is a truly fucked up mind DOESNT know its fucked up. If you know/think you are fucked up...thats a flag that things are working well. Walk into a psychiatrists office and say "hey doc, I think I am schitzo" and I guarantee you wont be diagnosed with schitzophrenia.

Oh, and no body has said LSD dont speed up a process which is already occurring. That is medically proven, and common knowledge. But people with real schitzophrenia dont sit around worrying about themselves being schitzo.

And there can be alot of problems in the mind that arent related to schitzophrenia at all, and these can also be brought out by the use of psychedelics. Hense :Use at your own risk.

dude if you had schizo you would have major problems in your everyday life. im training to become a clinical psychologist so i know what im talking about. shizophrenia is a major disorder, you would know if you had it bro. the symptoms you described are normal of tripping LOL, tripping makes many people feel a little shizo or crazy during it. if you had it you would be messed up big time after ur trip, you wouldnt just go back to baseline.

I love how people in college think they know everything about thier major lol. Then again I guess a year of college makes you an expert and gives you experience right?

Or maybe I'll just listen to my psych because ive been in this situation before. Or maybe ill learn from the experience of 3 of my life-long buddies that have such extreme form of schitzophrenia that they cannot function in every day life. Yea its obvious to me they have problems...THEY THINK THEY ARE FINE. Do you understand that? I mean, you being "in training" must mean you understand the logical conundrum that schitzophrenia creates for those afflicted correct?

Then again, everyone on the internet is a genius right? lol

your badmouthing me does nothing to disprove what i said or prove what you said. try to mellow and be a little friendlier pal. finished college at a major univeristy and am in the process of being accepted to grad school to get a Ph.d in psychology. so dont try to tell me i know nothing. the reason im going into the field is because my GRANDMA had schizo. all i did was give this guy who asked for our oppinion my oppinion which i feel holds weight as im trained in the field so dont tell me that i know nothing and accuse me of still stitting in a psych 100 class. you u got some hate u gotta drop bro. not once did i say anything that you attacked me for in reguards to a schizophrenic being unable to recognize their condition. they are delusional, obviously they dont always know of their problem. next time your gonna rant on someone try to use logic when constructing your criticism instead of just being plain rude and abrasive.

I'm trying to figure out what you mean by this. After doing acid a few times I find it leaves enduring effects. The enduring affects become very present when I go down to the water by my house sit crosslegged and gaze off into the clouds and go into a trance. I find once I get deeper and deeper into my mind I'm able to get into a trippy state very much like when I was on LSD. Geometric visuals start forming in and around clouds and when I relax even more the visuals become more complex. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. In fact I find these experiences to be very centering and blissful. I'm able to calm my mind and feel at one with the world/life.

I don't really know what I'm getting at but I've wanted to mention this. Am I inducing some form of schizophernia upon myself or am I just meditating? If I were to tell my mom about this she'd probably say that I have a good imagination and If I told a psychiatrist I'm sure they might show some concern. But I feel fine and I am able to fully function in my life. I definetly do not mind getting into this psychedelic state of mind....

Where is the line drawn anyways?

no your not inducing a form of schizophrenia. shizoprenia is not about having minor visuals or visual disturbances. its full on hallucinations that you are totally unable to differintiate from reality. this is a delusional state in which they believe what they are seeing is real. in some forms there is extreme paranoia and neurotic behavior. what your describing is more a form of meditation for you it sounds like. psychedelics arent the only way to achieve heightned states of consciousness they are but one way, and it looks like you are discovering another way for your self =)

I meant if you keep having stange ideas etc long after the trip, as others have said days and weeks after.
Hearing clear voices (not internal dialogue) in this period could suggest problems, and i'd seek advice.
Trusted friends (especially those who know tripping) would be useful as more objective judges of this.

You're description is perfectly normal 'hangover' from a trip.

In response to other bits, schizophrenics, especially when relapsing or developing, often know things are definately not alright. They often feel that they are going mad, or something serious is amiss with the world.
Quite often they won't vocalise it, for fear or being shunned or seen as crazy, but it's usually there, at some point at least.
This has created the myth that they don't ever know what's happening to them, or that talking about delusions will somehow make it worse.
Often people have strange experiences, and delusions form out of their best guess on what's happening. Talking can help them see a bit more reality...

Ledhed, agreed it is likely to have a major impact on your life, but it isn't always totally negative, and the impact isn't always significant.
There's reseach which suggests numbers are much higher than thought, but many do not contact services because there is no problematic impact in their lives.
I've known people who learned fantastic things, much in the vein of a bad trip, and also people with positive or comforting delusions and hallucinations which help their life.

Mind you i'd still seek professional help, as schizophrenia is not something to trifle with.

Most schizophrenic "hallucinations" are of an auditory nature. As someone in different thread stated, it may be easier to think of the disorder along the lines of a continuum, rather than all or nothing.

It would be expected that some schizophrenics are able to recognize their abnormal condition, while others may not.
