Interesting question. :coffee: The only psychedelic I regularly use is psilocin (mushrooms) so my answers are from a mushroomy perspective, and my knowledge of schizophrenia is purely based on stuff I've read:

Psychedelics do produce symptoms similar to psychosis (i.e hallucinations, delusions, thought disorder). Psychosis is one of the symptoms of schizophrenia, but from what I've read, it seems that psychedelics have more in common with the kind of psychosis that sometimes accompanies the manic episodes of bipolar disorder.

Watch this video from 0:35 to 6:10:

It describes some of these manic psychotic episodes, with symptoms such as:
-oneness, timelessness
-All-knowingness, sacredness
-Delusions / Hallucinations
-Thinking you are dreaming / in a play
-Being tested by God
-You are the Messiah, a prophet, a saint

The experiences described in the video sound very similar to someone who is tripping. They sound very similar to some of the trip reports on the Shroomery.

The biggest similarity between "classic" schizophrenia and psychedelics is probably delusional beliefs. A heavy mushroom trip can give you paranoid delusions, e.g you are on some kind of secret special mission.

However, the hallucinations of schizophrenics seem quite different in character to mushroom-type hallucinations.

Quote:
Chris Frith / Making Up the Mind:
"..there is a very interesting feature of the hallucinations associated with schizophrenia. These experiences are not about the physical world. These people do not just see colors and hear noises. Their hallucinations are about the mental world. They hear voices commenting on their actions, making suggestions and commands."

Schizophrenics may believe that their thoughts or actions are being controlled by external forces (this is why they might want to wear the proverbial "tinfoil hat" to avoid having their brainwaves interfered with).

I don't think many mushroom users report classic schizophrenic-type hallucinations of voices inside their head perceived as external agents, commenting on their behaviour or telling them what to do. Despite this, there is some overlap between psychedelic & schizophrenic experiences; for example, listen to music on mushrooms and the lyrics may take on a specific meaning, seeming to convey hidden messages. This is not too different to the way that schizophrenics may experience the world.

In a word, no. My worst trip felt like I was being lined up for special punishment by God. I have a notebook that describes the experience. The writing tails off about 3 hours into the trip, like those horror/sci-fi movies where people find the video diaries showing the last hours of the doomed videomakers. I remember the phrase "I pray for forgiveness for the ferocity of what I am about to unleash" stuck in my head. There are teethmarks on the notebook, with barely legible writing scrawled across the cover in all directions with GOD I NEED HELP at the centre. The last entries are bizarre and somewhat bleak:

"...more powerful and more violent than anything you have ever seen.."
"...the undigested malice in my steel claws..."
"...my nightmares have gotten out of control..."
"....the fires that are raging in my brain...."
"I can do no more than live with my nightmares and face the consequences."

I was almost literally climbing the walls, I was completely delusional, but apart from the delusional aspect it wasn't an experience that really resembled schizophrenia, at least not how I understand it.

But seeing as I re-dosed with 12g of fresh pans cyans in the middle of an already-difficult trip, it was my own fault it turned into a bit of a nightmare.

Idk If I'm somewhat schizo myself but man boomers and blotters get me to the point of shizophrenia for sure from what I've read and my schizophrenic friends have acted and said. I believe that it's completely like it in a way. And I think that's why some have bad trips is the fact of "never" coming back is in their mind and they don't want to feel crazy anymore. I get all kinds of vioces in my head and wierd languanges that sound elven to me. My brain feels like a giant computer making all kinds of beeps and noises like everything on the computer is trying to play at once. It's the definition of shizophenia in my book. I feel like I just want to hide but when I do hide your just fucked because you can't hide. Try to close my eyes to stop the insanity and guess what it just gets more insane. Everyone knows a guy who knows a guy who thinks he's a glass of orange juice from that LSD trip he took lol. But I definately second this notion man. Schizophrenia is party caused by high levels of seretonin in the brain and LSD, NH DMT and psilocin(dmt ho4 or something) is almost identical to seretonin molecule. Check the shizo artist that's getting popular in NYC Allan Streets and tell me that ain't a trip in a picture. Also check the schizo artist that draws cats and see his progression of his schizophrenia through his work. Compare that to spiritual artist alex grey.  Some one at the shroomery showed me a site called paradigmshift check it out it's got your answer buddy. Cheers.

Ive stayed awake on adderall before for five days (half a bottle of 90 30 mg pills), ive also done shrooms acid and dmt.

After staying awake for five days i went from what i call a casual stimulant psychosis to a severe stimulant psychosis. Casual psychosis is like seeing people out of the corners of your eyes in windows or doorways or entrances to other rooms. Hearing voices so subtle but just loud enough that you cant tell if its real or imaginative because its dead center of the two. Having to turn off the fans and Air conditioner and ever other source of sound just to confirm that you really are alone in your house and that there aren't people stalking you.

Now that's casual, as soon as i went into the 5 day mark and it became severe, i closed my eyes and had a hallucinogenic experience similar in intensity and effects to any serotogenic psychedelic at a high dose but characteristically different.

And as with any sufficiently strong enough psychedelic, the experience transcends your ability to describe it coherently with any verbal language. To very sum up the differences very poorly, the stimulant psychosis felt extremely selfish, had strong tinges of delusions of grandeur (being in love with yourself so severely, your brain ceases to process the external senses because the external senses cease to matter when yourself and your internal false reality is more important than real reality.) the close eyed visuals were also characteristically, different, they were more abstract and surreal and there was no fractal quality to them whereas hallucinations on psychedelics almost always seem fractal in one way or another.

I equate absurdly high doses of caffeine, meth, coke, adderal, ritalin to match what i believe to be the experience of schizophrenia over any psychedelic.
