unwarrented bans
    #6486133 -

What can users do to protected themselves from them? such as mods with power trips, and reporting unfair bans, is their any legal regulation?, or is basically the sites discretion? which any mod can basically ban you for any little tiff he has regardless of any rules

how do bans work anyway?

can you get banned from accessing the site altogether?

thx for any replys

The Shroomery is not a democracy. It has no constitution. You have no legal rights to it.

I don't think anyone needs 'protection' from mods. They're pretty good for the most part.

well I know its not any democracy, but I like posting here, but I also like speaking my mind without having to worry about pissing off some mod. If I want to be perfect gent, I might as well post over a Mycotopia, which I don't like that format, I guess so far, its been going OK, but I've had some weird message that says your not allowed to access this forum, does everybody get that when a server goes down? but anyways maybe I'm still not allowed, because I couldn't access this site just a little while ago, but I changed some addresses to make my surfing identity a secret. Maybe its just all paranoia, but I'll be pist if some mod gives me some permaban based on some small tiff

I was wondering do they track ip addresses and ban users that way?

The mods here are pretty good and seldom do we see problems where a user has been banned without merit. I'm not saying it doesn't happen from time to time, but it doesn't occur very often. If you feel that a moderator is being unfair towards you, then open a support ticket and let the admin know about the situation.

Mods cannot simply ban a user. There is a system in place that mods use to make note of rule infractions. After enough infractions have been added, the system then allows moderators to issue a short ban. As more infractions pile up, the length of the bans that the moderators can issue increases.

A member may be banned from a forum, or from the site as a whole. We can also ban an IP address or an entire range of IP addresses, though this is rarely done and requires an admin to implement.

Looking at your specifics, you have run into four moderators. One issued a warning for flaming in S&P, which is against the forum rules. One banned you from a forum for use of a Puppet, which is against site rules. The other two warned, and then banned, you from the Pub for flaming.

No single moderator has issued an action against you more than once. Two of the actions were warnings and two were temp forum bans. I see no pattern at all of a single moderator "picking" on you. The moderators actions were appropriate in all four documented cases.

> but I also like speaking my mind without having to worry about pissing off some mod.

Simple. Post in OTD and avoid other areas of the site and you shouldn't have any problems. There is a difference between speaking your mind and flaming/trolling. If you cannot understand that difference, and if you cannot recuse yourself from flaming outside of OTD, then you will eventually find yourself banned from the site as a whole.

I'll agree with all that except the puppet ban, but I'm not really trying to make any cases here

so you can ban someone from the whole site. That right there is stiff, hmmm, also you did say that theirs some infraction system in place, but can that be manipulated? Mods can make stuff up for that, such as the whole puppet thing, I've only used this name and never presented myself with some false identity.

I am aware of the flaming rules and follow them, but what constitutes trolling, and I think if someone can all of a sudden change their minds and get all ticy tac with the flaming interpretation too. Cause also mods like to post too, and they get annoyed for any little thing they can say its a flame. I guess I should refrain from swear words altogether even if it isn't directed towards anybody, but expresses my cynicism of the actual argument. I don't know, this kinda heightens my paranoia in away, but I guess everybody does alright around here, of course you don't hear about those who were banned complaining, cause their banned, especially if you were banned from the whole site indefinitely, is there a temporary ban from the whole site? And can mods find loop holes in the system? well I guess asking too many questions, so feel free not to answer

i don't understand these issues. nor do i understand peoples' fucking fetish with puppets.

this site is meant for the spread of unbiased information.

Granted, it is a community also, but come on, if you cant come on here and act respectable (even after warnings in some cases), you get banned(right?)?

i just don't see, how any of the basic rules can be misconstrued and warrant an illegitimate ban.

this is a general reply, not meant to anyone.

I don't see how this is related to PAL. Explain it to me, otherwise I'll move this thread to the Pub shortly.

Note that this isn't WAF material either as contesting administrative actions is handled through the Support Ticket System.

I agree that the mods here should be changed much more often, just like diapers. The same thing that happens to diapers, happens to mods. :yesnod:

I have three mods move this thread to three different spots, what are you all trying to say, is like a hot potato thread that no one wants to acknowledge, and everyones scared of, if your mods are so concerned with the placement of this thread then go ahead lock it or erase it or whatever it is you do, if its so intruding, give me freaking break. I have a feeling I ain't going to be here much longer anyway

This thread is also not about contesting any specific case, and I'm not arguing any mods or admins actions specifically, I just have my concerns with the system in place. And the new mod work thats been going on. Some these new mods are getting carried away I think. Also why are their so many admins and mods, pretty soon everybody's going to be a mod or admin. Also does admins have to go through the same infraction system? I really like to know that one too.

I've learned (the hard way i guess) that unwarranted bans usually go hand in hand with warranted bans so don't fuck with people and you shouldn't have to worry. I can be one bipolar mother fucker online so i haven't exactly made a lot of friends.

BTW If you have a problem with bans you should probably not post in OTD or the PUB because you obviously can't keep people from dragging you down during a disagreement. Keep it on topic and positive.

There are legitimate puppets for grow logs. There are issues with anonymous browsers though that make it a moot point but a PM with Ythan will clear that up. Bottom line, you get banned you fill out a support ticket and the judge decides. Just like our judicial system previous bans or behavior are taken into account.

32 here...

if a mod wrongly banned someone, it wouldnt just be the admins comming down on him, but also the rest of the moderator community.

there is always the support ticket system as well which allows appeals of un-warranted bans.

is there a temporary ban from the whole site?
Yes, but you can still contact an admin if you want.

And can mods find loop holes in the system?
I don't know. It has not been a problem yet as far as I know.

Also why are their so many admins and mods, pretty soon everybody's going to be a mod or admin
There are 50000 members and around 50 mods/admins, I don't think that is excessive. What are you worried about?

More questions?

Re: unwarrented bans [Re: Annom]

also certain mods like to work from the description of the forum as their reason for erasing posts, and not from stated rules, if you think the description should be a rule, then make it a rule. Is one of my criticisms.

Also are admins liable to the same infraction system as mods? You forgot that one.

the 50000 member to 50 mods/admins is one statistic, but what is the ratio of how many are in place at one single time. 50000 members aren't using the shroomery all at the same time.

I think you all are bunch of cops, everybody got everybody's back regardless of any wrongs, LOL
