first time cultivation
    #6430376 -

I'm looking for a good start to finish cultivation book for one growing for the first time. Also would love to know what strain would I would be most happy with. spores101.com has 6 pages of pyslocibe strains, I could never make a decision on my own. one last thing, how many jars does one spore syringe inaculate?
any information is abundantly appreciated!!!

There are good books out there. Books by Paul Stamets would be your best bet, althought I've never read any of them. You really don't need a book to learn to cultivate, everything you need to know is here on this website.

this thread here will give you lots of info on strains http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/1196260/an/0/page/0

one spore syringe can inoculate about aproximately 5-8 jars, depending on how many CC's you use per jar.

That's a pretty complete book.  Ignore the 'improved pf tek' section, though.

One spore syringe will do about 12 jars.

12 jars if you use 1 cc per jar. i'm extremely generous with my spores, i like to give 1.5-3 ccs per jar for super fast growth time. there is nothing wrong with using 1 cc per jar it will just take alittle longer to colonize.

I'd highly suggest "The Mushroom Cultivator" by Paul Stamets.

Read it cover to cover (twice) then keep it on your shelf, it makes a great reference for forumlas, conversions, numbers, contaminate identification, and so on.

Some of the material in it may not apply to what you're trying to do - it covers several species besides active psilocybes/panaeolus, BUT in understanding requirements of various species you'll have a much clearer picture of what it is you're trying to do with the species you choose (probably cubensis?)  Same goes for the chapter on preparing compost - which you'll probably never actually do, but learning that process teaches you about the nutritional requirements of growing mushrooms.  Also, there's a section on building a grow space for a large commercial type venture - may not directly apply either, but there's lots of really good ideas and information that can be scaled right down to a small hobby size.

Point is, undersatnd the underlying concepts, and the rest becomes quite easy.

Chances are you won't use most of the methods in that book, we've got a whole collection of "easier" do it yourself type methods here.  BUT, I'll reiterate, the underlying concepts are important, and you'll learn them well in that book - then when you see the methods folks have devised here, you'll have no problem figuring out why things are done how they are.

Good luck

(Same goes to everybody: you should be ashamed if you haven't at least read the book yet.)

I completely endorse this.  It's so hard to get good results that you are comfortable with if you're just following instructions without a clue.
