Sixty killed in Baghdad suicide truck bombing

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- A suicide bomber targeting laborers killed 60 people Tuesday in Baghdad and wounded 220 others, Iraqi officials said.

A pickup truck, loaded with about 440 pounds (200 kilograms) of explosives, pulled into central Baghdad's Tayaran Square as hundreds of unemployed Iraqis holding picks and shovels gathered seeking a day's work.

The truck driver signaled to the would-be workers that he had jobs -- prompting people to crowd around the pickup before he detonated his bomb, said an Iraqi Interior Ministry official.

The explosion, which sent a cloud of black smoke into the sky, set several cars ablaze, and gunfire sounded after the blast, Reuters reported.

"A driver with a pickup truck stopped and asked for laborers. When they gathered around the car, it exploded," a witness told Reuters as he helped a stumbling survivor with a blood-stained head bandage.

wow. i cannot fathom what prompts people to do this sort of thing. religious extremism is kinda like a collective insanity. what else do you call something like this? sane individuals do not do this sort of thing.

Its a instapass into heaven in their twisted views, i guess similar to the concept of japanese getting in explosives packed airplanes and crashing them into aircraft carriers.

At that time it was a act of desperation, but now it is a effective tactic in modern warfare that leaves long lasting psychological and mental effects, its Effects based warfare, the more explosions of these recruitments means less jobs and a Iraqi government in perpetual failure.

Most of these people without jobs will either join insurgencies or paramilitaries.

This is just a good example of the Sunni-Shiia divide which is becoming a fixture in mid-east especially in Lebanon.

I don't think its insanity, I think that the individual bombers are stil acting rationally, I just think that they have been given VERY bad information.

I think an easy test to show that they're acting rationally would be to simply ask: Are you still willing to be a suicide bomber if you know in advance that your attack will fail and your cause will lose?

Now if the answer to that was "yes" than you have a good case for insantiy.

If we've learned anything in these past few years, it's how truly convincing propaganda can be. Look at how many Americans were suckered by "Loose Change". When the Iranian president claims that Hezbollah destroyed "at least half of Israel" people believe him, despite the obvious lack of truth in that statement.

Those same people believe that an Israel that is "almost dead" and an America that is "on its last legs" just need 1 more suicide bombing to achieve victory.

It's all lies, but they have no better information to go on, and so they make choices that seem insane, but are actually well-reasoned but based upon the complete bull they're fed every day of the week.

Don't forget that faith also plays a big role. When one is fanatical in their faith, has nothing worth living for, and will get the ego's desires in martyrdom...

Not really. I'd say that's martyrdom for the loss of their religion more than insanity.

The fact that one is willing to commit suicide because of delusions about God's will in the first place indicates insanity, whether the movement is successful or not. I think these people would still kill themselves even if they knew they were doomed to lose, because they would still become martyrs in the eyes of God and take out some of the enemy at the same time.

But I think the point THC was triyng to make (love the acronym) is that we don't know this particular bomber committed this act for religious reasons.

He could have been atheistic and just wanted to join the struggle against the "American Occupation".

I'm not saying this is true either, but we just don't know...

I suppose you're right, there's a slim but highly unlikely possibility that he could have done it "just because".

Given where this occurred, it is much more likely that he did it because of being an Islamic extremist.

That's like seeing 5 guys on a street corner all wearing 100% red and saying "Maybe they just all like red clothes and aren't in a gang." Is it possible? Sure. Is it likely enough to consider seriously? I'd say not.
