More Al Quada Bombings....?

BLASTS ROCK ISTANBUL

At least 25 people are now reported dead and nearly 400 wounded after two huge bomb blasts ripped through the British consulate and HSBC's Istanbul HQ.

Fourteen of the dead were killed in the consulate blast, the city's governor said.

The blasts are being seen as an attack on British interests - HSBC is London-based and British owned.

The first explosion targeted the 23-storey bank building, shattering all its windows and leaving it in ruins.

TV pictures showed body and body parts scattered outside the charred building.

The second blast ripped through the consulate, tearing off its frontage.

'No holding back'

Turkish TV reported that British Consul-General Roger Short died in the attack.

The attacks, believed to have been caused by suicide car bombings, follow a double strike in the city at the weekend on two synagogues, leaving 23 dead.

Turkish officials said the attack on the HSBC building was carried out using a truck loaded with explosives.

Tony Blair, standing beside George Bush at the Foreign Office, said there would be British victims in today's blasts.

"Once again we are reminded of the evil these people pose to innocent people, to our way of life," the Prime Minister said.

He said there "would be no holding back" in the war on terror until it was "defeated utterly" - and no pause in the campaign in Iraq.

Mr Bush said the US "would not bow" to attempts to "intimidate or demoralise" the West.

A caller to a Turkish news agency claimed responsibility for the attack in the name of al Qaeda and a smaller Islamist group.

TV pictures showed scenes of devastation outside the bank, a plush modern building in an affluent area of Istanbul.

Windows were blown out, cars destroyed and turned over and rubble scattered across streets. Smoke filled the air and passers-by scrabbled among the wreckage for signs of life.

Many walking wounded staggered around the blast scene in a stunned state.

Earlier reports suggested there had been up to five explosions but Turkey's interior minister said there were two explosions.

Sky News Online reader Oliver Sheehan said the consulate, "off the Oxford Street of Istanbul", was not as well protected as the nearby US consulate and had a taxi rank outside it which could be used to launch a bombing.

English teacher Chris Kitrinos said he was concerned cars could just drive past the consulate.

The Foreign Office and HSBC could not say how many staff worked in each building.

A HSBC statement said: "It is with deep regret that we have to confirm that there have been a number of fatalities. Our thoughts are with the bereaved, the injured and their families.

"We are extremely concerned for the safety of our staff."

The British consulate was targeted in April when an explosive device was hurled at the building.

British businesses in Istanbul are now on full alert.

Britons have been warned only to travel to Turkey for essential business.

British Airways cancelled a flight from Heathrow to Istanbul this morning but later rescheduled it.

"We are considering the situation,"a BA spokesman said.

That would be a correct assessment.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

To make this a correct statement, prove that us NOT invading Iraq would have prevented this attack.

Funny how no matter where, no matter who, and no matter what, it's always the US's fault.

Seems like it was done in response to Bush flying to the UK to get a few good headlines in the american media. All the places attacked were British.

Incidentally the intelligence services warned Blair that invading Iraq would increase terrorism.

Funny how no matter where, no matter who, and no matter what, it's always the US's fault.

No - not everything, just the illegal wars of aggression.

well perhaps it would not have prevented this particular attack. but i can say with certainty that MANY terrorist attacks would NOT have happened if we didn't invade Iraq.

True, and what do you guys expect? Do you expect friendship by invading other countries? I think Bush should care about U.S. problems and stay at home solving them and stop fucking around the world. And if he thinks U.S. is going to win, he trips on shrooms more than anyone in this site. U.S. will never defeat what you americans call terrorism and I think he doesn?t want it to happen cause that?s his bussiness. Besides, terrorism does not exists, it?s just the way these people can fight back the invaders, remember they don?t have the technology and the money you have, they?re poor people. And if americans call that terrorism, you are as terrorist as they are.
