Becoming Offended

Becoming offended is a huge waste of time and energy. Why must we be continually attached to being right or wrong. This robs us of our happiness, and hinders our ability to act. If you don't agree with this..well, fuck you.

I did learn about the mistake of "self-importance" from the Casteneda books. It is one of those teachings which glommed on and informs me to this day about being offended. Sometimes, as a "controlled folly," I must feign a certain amount of taking offense in working with adolescents. They think nothing of calling an adult a liar, or of asking inappropriate questions about one's spouse or of one's anatomy or sex life. A certain amount of facial-audible indignation and offense is absolutely necessary for such a 'teaching moment,' but again, it is a "controlled folly."

With an adolescent I find it very hard to NOT be offended sometimes. For most of my adult life I have styled myself to be an authority figure. It was a mistake, but I was a father and this is my cultural programming. So, when a child shows disrespect it really taps into my self importance. I have gotten better at this as I was employed by a middle school for the last 2 years (I now work for the district in another capacity), and I learned to stay my anger a bit. Check my early posts here. When I showed up I was the king of being offended and righteous indignation.

people don't really offend me, it's their effluvium that is offensive.
and it's not my self-importance that finds offense with it, it's not opinion or ego that finds offense- it's the nature of vileness to perturb even a saint.

and children, or adolescents never offend me, because even when they are seeming offensive, it's a tiny flow compared to those who have been ignorant or offensive for many many years.

hold fast to that which is good-
(let go of that which is bad)
when your mind is poisoned by anger or hurt feelings, learn to focus on the beauty that exists all around.
don't focus or fixate on how offensive everybody seems to be- because that will always be so, impossible to change it, except by finding your own inner zone of peacefulness.

I learned long ago not to be so easily offended. However, it took me a lot longer to realize the wisdom in not offending others.

Because NOTHING personal to me is at stake. What other reasoning do I need? On a sprituality forum being offensive can sometimes be constructive. I care only for the result that I choose to elicit. Do you like walking on eggshells around fragile egos?
