Ignorance is the root cause of samsara. Eliminate ignorance through wisdom, and the cycle ceases to repeat itself.

"Ignorance is the main cause of suffering. It is because ignorance that we crave for pleasures of the senses, for existence and for non-existence. We also cling to pleasant experience, to ideas, and most significantly, to the idea of an independent and permanent self. Ignorance is the cause of actions. Defilement is the impurities of mind, resulting in actions."

Nirvana is beyond time. Once stable in abiding in ones own true nature, how can one ever be separated from that primordial source again?

This reminds me of an old Tibetan saying:

"How can one prevent a drop of water from drying up? Drop it into the ocean!"

Once we are done with craving and attachment, what ties would we have left to worldy activity?

The desire to break this "cycle" is only an issue if you believe that somehow you, soulcircus, are everlasting. But that is a delusion of ego. I think that beyond death, the nature of self, if such a thing exists, is vastly different than anything you could conceptualize with ego at the helm. More like the drop in the ocean, or breaking waves.

And isn't the desire to break the cycle of death and rebirth just one more thing tethering you to the wheel?

Re: Breaking the cycle of death and rebirth [Re: Viveka]

The traditional Buddhists break the cycle through renunciation and avowing to remove themselves from the game. They seek the samadhi of shamatha or calm abiding without desire, and they use vippassana to look into their condition thus removing ignorance through direct perception of Buddha's teachings, as opposed to mere bookish study.

But they are not the only Buddhists, and other Buddhists may or may not agree with escaping from the wheel. What most people know of Buddhism is pretty much the tip of the iceberg. In colleges most professors never even mention the Mahayana except in passing, and they certainly never mention the Vajrayana. And when they do it's always with a cough up their sleeve and a shrugging off as if Buddha really only taught his four noble and 8fold, and nothing more. This is not the case.

The continued notion that one can escape from the wheel is itself a product of continuing limiting understanding of Buddhism produced through arrogant Western scholarship without real practice.

I think the continued notions of being able or not being able to escape from samsara or wether such a wheel even exists are products of a continuing limited understanding of what happens to a human being upon death. This understanding is naturally limited since no one knows.

The cycle is broken by conjoining once again with the Ground of Being, and that is God. A cycle by nature is limited, so becoming unlimitedness in itself will naturally evade death and rebirth.

What is more majestic than the existance of the wheel (or god for that matter) is our ability to conjure up these ideas, and continue to debate on them.

Buddha himself was against mysticism.

Time back agian to examine the greatness and the human mind... and the now. ... and stop fantasizing.

Breaking the cycle of death and rebirth is easy...just die. You only live once as far as any one can divine.

Yeah, it doesn't matter how many lifes we had or will have because only the life we have counts. This is the only one we have direct control over in the now.

But considering differnt lives of oneself, no matter if true or not, can give interesting insights for the current life while getting into total awareness of our timespace position

With Buddhism in general, it is said that it is so rare to have a perfect human rebirth with all the qualities that will enable us to practice the dharma that it is almost like we only have this one life to do something about our situation, as no-one knows what the situation will be like with the infiite possibilites of an uncertain future.

soulcircus said:
Supposedly reaching nirvana is said to be the point at which you break the cycle of death and rebirth, at least in concerns with buddhism.

so, my question, is this and how can it be possible? considering you must have origionated from the same source that you are returning too, whos to say it won't just happen again in exactly the same way it did in the first place..

none of us here are equipped to discuss death and birth but we all inherently understand what is being talked about:

let us say you have peristalsis cramping in your gut (oh, maybe it is from mushrooms, perhaps just regular discomfort), as each pulse peaks your hands go into a tensing and releasing reflex. Some feed back from the embarrasment about this raises the base level of tension temporarily, for higher reactivity, basically guaranteeing that the next belly cramp will also have a reaction in your hands.

thus a cycle of pain with craving for release of pain.

each arizing of pain is like the birth, each clenching of the hands and embarrased expression is like the death. The cycle continues until you observe it very closely at which point a deeper letting go in the moment takes over.

the ongoing letting go is the real world analog of virtual nibbana.

it releases and is a healing relief, but it is not a state - more an attitude adjustment to keep mindful and keep releasing the tension as it arizes in different parts of the body and mind.

any other consideration of this are dogmatic or speculative, all authorities are basically quoting other authorities except for the way of directly seeing the buddha's teaching in action here and now.
