Being blessed while sneezing

I must of sneezed a million times in my life and usually there's someone around who always thinks they need to bless me. I get tired of hearing it constantly. I saw something on TV one time about how this habit came from the times when plague used to spread throughout Europe. One of the first symptoms of the bubonic plague is sneezing and this resulted in the sneezer being blessed during the religious frenzy that came about when the plague was spreading. Also, the Flagellates formed as a fanatic religious group as a result of the plague. They would go around the country side whipping themselves, carrying big crosses, etc. Many of the Jews were burned at the stake, too, because the Christians felt the plague was punishment for their sins and toleration of the Jews.

Me and someone else sneezes at work occasionally and I keep hearing people say "bless you". So today, I tried whipping myself with a newspaper in front of everybody and probably looked like a freak doing it. I explained that it was because of the plague and the whipping ritual used to purge the pious of their sins. The blessings have stopped at least for now.

I don't say it. It's just politeness. People sometimes get offended that I don't say it. They also sometimes get offended if I don't respond to a bless you. They'll repeat themselves. "Bless you. BlEss youuu... Hey, you're supposed to say 'thank you.'"

Still, I don't say it or say thank you when people say it to me. Yep, yep I'm just better than most people. (farrrt) Aaaaaah that smells good.

I've had people almost flip out because I didn't thank them for holding the door open for me or I didn't hold the door open for them.

yeaaaah lol that's a good one! people are wayyyy more obsessed with that. Some stranger had the nerve to start yelling at my dad that he wasnt raising his kids right, because i didnt hold the door for the guy. i was just a kid. my dad didnt back down. then he went to your house and beat up your dad and did your mom.

Its true, Im guilty of it, I like being "blessed" simply because it shows respect, and I return to favor to show respect, the meaning of bless you has completely changed, subconciously what it really does is puts an acceptance factor for you going around sneezing in public (think about it, its dirty), and depending on the persons tone of voice when they say it, you can clearly tell if they are forgiving you for spreading germs in their space or offended.

Everyone has a natural right to sneeze if they need to. Without it they risk nasal damage, infection and maybe even death. Maybe the ones who bless you should be whipped.

Here's a suggestion, Pierre: Next time, when you have to sneeze infront of somebody like this, don't cover your mouth. Just sneeze on whatever you're holding. Or if you are at a buffet, deliberately sneeze under the sneeze-guard.

That last one was a bit crazy, but I think you get my point.

Covering one's mouth while sneezing doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I tend to direct my sneeze to the floor. Considering how much we interact with objects using our hands, sneezing upon them is more likely to spread germs.

Unless, of course, you happen to carry Germ-X with you, then feel free to sneeze into your hands. I also simply think it is fucking gross to sneeze into one's hands! Maybe I'm just weird and don't like snot and wet stuff all dripping on my hands...

I either sneeze:

a)Into the 'insides' of my elbow, with my face buried into my clothed 'elbow pits', if you will.

b)Underneath my shirt, with my shirt pulled over my nose and covering my lower face.

Both are quite effective at keeping the germ-jihad to a minimum.

Some of my coworkers are amongst those who get offended if a bless-you/thank-you ritual isn't performed when someone sneezes. While I don't have a problem with thanking someone for wishing me well, I'm not one to go around blessing... I have started saying gesundheit, which seems to satisfy the politeness patrol.

It's a relief NOT to hear bless you. I feel at peace being able to sneeze openly and not expect a response. My physical response to the environment doesn't require someone's approval!
