BTW- did you guys watch the trailer for that movie?  It especially made me laugh because of my history.  I liked the lady at the end when he asks her if she had advice for the Mormons and she said they should become Catholic!   Thats a good idea!!  Give up one nutty set of beliefs for another!

I didn't think the debate had become heated.   But yes, there are a few Mormons around here.  I was Mormon for the first 2 decades or so of my life (born and raised) but my belief structure has changed dramatically in the last 16-17 years.  But I went so far as to serve a mission from the ages of 19-21 (thats right, I was the guy in the tie riding the bike around) so you could make the argument that I am probably the most knowledgeable person on these forums when it comes to Mormon doctrine.  And believe me, I always get a kick out of what people think Mormons are all about.  The misconceptions are often very funny to those of us in the know.

As for the 'unbelieveable' things about Joseph Smith...I find them no more unbeliebeable then the things taught by many more mainstream religions.  At this point in my life I find it kinda silly even to believe in God!

I was raised as a scientologist, but half of my family was mormon also... so i kind of got the experience from both of the "nutty" religions.... and here is my opinion...

they are both religions, and like ALL (in my opinion) religions, they have their good side, and their wacky, and their bad side. The good side is where all the good info is. Its what people talk about when they say that they were "saved" and that they were shown the light....

The wacky side is the side where they try to get you to believe things that are logically impossible. Its the faith side. Its the side that christains say that moses split the red sea and that there was a tower that almost reached heaven, and the talking snake... etc.... for Scientology its the whole "space religion" side. Im sure you know what im talking about. This side isnt nessicarily bad, but its just pretty wacky if you think about it for all religions.

then the bad side... its the side where people go to war in the name of a person who preached peace and loving. Its the side where people judge other people because they are different, even when they're told not to. Its the prejudice side....

The reason mormons and scientologist are picked on(along with the other religions), is because they are different from the main stream. They are not the same as every other religion out there, and since they dont have as many followers as the other religions, people pick on them. This doesnt apply to when Athiests make fun of a certain religion however.


in my opinion, what ever someone wants ot believe in is cool, as long as they do good. If it is not causing harm to anyone, then go for it. If the religion or lack of religion is what helps your life, then go for it. I dont think it matters if your Catholic, Buddhist, Scientologist etc.... as long as your not cramming your belief down someone's throat and you are a better person because of it, then go for it....






allthough i will say it annoys me when Scientologist cry when ever someone makes fun of them....

I am sorry about being a dick on my earlier post, you all got the wrong impression of me from that and I'm sorry, I just see all these Mormon bashing threads around here, and it just got the point where I wanted to say something, I know I said it in a very one sided and assholeish way.

I was actually a hardcore Mormon basher back in my teens. But I have been blessed with so much since I started going back to church, I have a wife, I have a child and I have a home. So I would say it has worked for me. I guess thats why it gets to me when people poke fun at them.

You guys are actually cool. Its true to just do good in your life and everything will work out. I will say there is a god, I know this, I see it in my sons eyes everyday, you don't have to believe me, but I believe me. I have seen him do some amazing things. I even prayed to help my grow start pinning cuz I was getting worried, and behold, that very day, I had pins.

So can't we all just get a bong?

An interesting note about the word of wisdom, it clearly states that you can drink "mild barley drinks" otherwise known as beer, but no one seems to realize that, my wife even asked the missionaries about it and they said "It means you can drink barley tea", wtf is barley tea? Also all herbs of the earth are for the use of man.

One thing about Mormon's is they can be very closed minded when they really don't need to be (but so can anyone I guess).

As for Joseph smith doing unbelievable things, I assume a lot of it has been twisted around and whatnot, but the bottom line is he made a religion, that works, and helps families stay together and be happy. So for that he is a great man.
