Atheism
    #5164536 -

If atheists don't believe in a deity...

What do they believe in?

If the answer is nothing, that seems just as far fetched to me, considering one can't conceive of "nothing".

I also find it ironic that Sciences ultimate answer to life is that energy has always "just been there". It's like asking a child why they've done something and they say "just did".

Why not?

"According to (Stephen) Hawking, there is a 98% chance that a universe of a type as ours will come from a Big Bang. Further, using the basic wavefunction of the universe as basis, Hawking's equations indicate that such a universe can come into existence without relation to anything prior to it, meaning that it could come out of nothing."

So then, who created God?
Or has he always "just been there"?

I think it's likely to be created out of a force so great our primitive human brains aren't capable of understanding it.
It's more exciting than believing in nothing isn't it!

Actually I view the science as extremely more exciting, I view religion and God as archaic humor. Science doesnt claim to know everything, it seeks to find it out, so your idea that sciences ultimate answer is anything, is just silly and stereotypical.

It's pretty obvious that there's *something*. I'm not sure what you mean by "believe in nothing".

I don't believe in an entity seperate from the universe which created everything else. I believe in the essential unity of existence - ultimately, there is only one thing. I'm not sure whether you'd consider me an atheist or not, and don't claim that my personal beliefs are representative of any particular group.

If you knew who or what God is you would have your answer.

St. Thomas Aquinas' Second proof for God:

Basically this proof shows God is the self-causing explanation upon which all of reality can be explained.

The term God implies an entity that is self-causing. So to say who created God shows an ignorance of the meaning of God.

Well by saying that you show an ignorance to looking for Truth that is visible. Dude religions are a scam. Realize it man. Come here donate or go to hell ahhh hell a threat of all things for god to do threaten us! No wait then they say hes all loving but he threatens us and we need a "healthy" fear of this fuck faced BS!

belief
1: any cognitive content held as true
2: a vague idea in which some confidence is placed

Accepting nothing as certianty = believing in nothing

Humanity has developed various methods of determining 'truth', but none of them seem foolproof.

Lol mushmanthemanic I am liking you more and more as I read what you say.

Well since I don't believe anything, I know how it all went down but it is just to much of a pain in my ass to explain and I have to make my brain have this crazy feeling, I believe it is the feeling of extreme thinking possibly unlocking my other side of my brain for a wile but now time to contradict my self. Sigh here goes grr

I believe that I know the truth.

Ouch that hurt to say.

How can you be certain that what you see Truth?

Senses are decieving.

That's a great ignorant assumption. I find most Christian practices to be a joke. They focus on redemption and not "sinning" and steer away from the importance of Love. I think it's sad that people assume that one who believes in God must be a part of some religion.

Rationalism is my religion. Science is not the only means by which truth may be discovered.

Agreed with the bottom statement in more ways than one.

But our senses that are deceiving when up to speed well they have kept us alive before fire and they led us to water and food before knowing what eating was. Seem pretty reliable to me.

Senses are decieving.

Deceived by the word deceived. It was spelled wrong there and in the first post. I'm sure you just glanced right over it.

But yes, the senses are reliable.

Atheism = belief that there are no god(s). It's one of those belief systems that can often seem self-defeating. Many atheists won't believe anything without sufficient reasoned evidence or 'proof', yet they choose to believe in a lack of deities as a convenience (simplicity; not needed for their understanding of reality) or to fit in (seems like a common view for intellectual / rebellious types); despite any direct proof that there aren't any such deities.

Most respectable people that don't believe in the existence of god(s) are agnostic; thinking that there's not enough good reason to believe either option, but generally accepting the lack of god(s) as more likely for simplicity's sake.

For ages, gods have been shrinking in power. They once controlled most everything around us. Now, through the rise of science, we can understand things much more deeply and in a more useful / exploitable way than when we considered them godly domain. These days, enough is explained deterministically that gods have less and less possible ways to affect the world.

Of course, who's to say that acts of God wouldn't also fit into science? The apparent truth of science in explaining things doesn't negate that there are other things at play beyond our senses.

In short, atheists (and many agnostics) believe that god(s) are unnecessary. They may not know what caused this world to exist as it does, but they have faith (ahh, irony) that it is all, in fact, explainable without divine powers, which are seen as catch-alls to make people feel like they know more than they really do. It's easy to accept that God makes lightning because he's angry, but describing the process in terms of meteorology and physics gives us a lot more directly useful explanation.

Belief in God is just so that people don't have to fess up to not knowing anything, and instead can feel all smug and special that they've got the ultimate answer that those damn atheists just aren't wise enough to grasp.

Incidentally, lack of belief in God is quite often so that the individual can feel more intelligent and evolved, knowing with absolute conviction that science is, in fact, the REAL ultimate answer, which those damn religious freaks are too damn stupid and superstitious to understand.

I am atheist but I believe in something. It has to do with science though. Not any that was taught to me in a sense that someone told me but tought to me through learning on my own and researching like a nerd. But hey I may be a nerd in fact I think I am.
