If it crashes your PC all the time it's probably a problem with your computer, not Folding@home. Do you have problems running other CPU intensive apps?

Nope - this computer is pretty fast. P4 2.4ghz w/ 1g ram. I was running it when this PC had Windows 2000 on it, maybe that was part of the problem...

I have never once seen Folding@Home cause a problem with a computer. I would suspect a hardware problem if you are crashing when it runs... most likely bad memory. (You aren't overclocking are you? This can cause problems as well...)

Nah, the machine runs fine otherwise. I haven't noticed any problems, really. It's not my box, really, though - it's a work PC. I'm the only one who uses it, but I don't care enough about it to do serious diagnostic stuff.

Computers exhibit quirks all the time; the proper (or improper) combination of hardware and software causes things to go berserk sometimes.

Perhaps I'll test it now that XP is installed, just for turds & laughter.

I was having problems with Win XP and f@h not playing nice together, and my box is bulletproof. I determined that the power saving scheme, and the way the integrated VGA handled the screen saver, and some quirky openGL in f@h all combined to create the crashes.

Here's what is working for me- set the power scheme to "Always on", screen saver to "Blank", and minimize f@h if you're not tripping on it at the time. You get to the power saving schemes same way you get to the screen saver selections- right click the desktop and select "Properties". Find the tab marked "Screen Saver" and the power schemes selector is accessible from the button right under the screen saver area on the same tab.

f@h crashed me four or five times in a row until I did this- now it's running like a champ- My f@h Stats

finished my 1st WU today. idk how many points i got. it took about 12 hours. now i am doing one that has 500 frames! pc estimates it will take 3 more days, yikes

Setting up Folding@home

Just wanted to post a step-by-step guide to setting up Folding@home as a service on Windows NT/2K/XP. I originally wrote it for my dad but it could come in handy for you guys too since it explains how to configure some advanced options to get maximum points.

- Grab the latest version of the text-only console (obviously).
- Move it wherever you want it to be installed.
- Rename it to FAH-Console.exe. This is purely for aesthetic reasons, since the service will point to the executable. If you're anything like me, it would bug you if you eventually upgrade to a new version but have to rename it to FAH502-Console.exe to get it to work. I mean, that's not the real version number!
- Run the executable with the -configonly flag. It will prompt you for some setup information:
-- User name: Whatever you want, your BB username is recommended.
-- Team: 12679
-- Launch as service? Yes
-- Ask before fetching? No
-- Use IE settings? Yes
-- Allow large work units? Yes
-- Change advanced options? Yes
-- Priority: Idle
-- CPU requested: 100
-- Disable optimized assembly? No
-- Pause on battery power? Yes for laptops or computers with a UPS, otherwise No
-- Interval between checkpoints? 15
-- Request units without deadlines? No
-- Ignore deadline information? No
-- Machine ID: 1 (this is for multiple installations on the same machine, not different machines)
- The program will terminate. Go to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\FAH@C:+Program Files+Folding@home+FAH-Console.exe (or whatever the correct path is).
- At the end of the 'ImagePath' key, add the flags '-advmethods -forceasm'.
-- Advmethods gives it permission to request new and experimental work units. These give you extra points when you complete them.
-- Forceasm forces it to use optimized instructions even if it terminated improperly. Your computer probably doesn't have a defective FPU so if it crashes it likely isn't F@H's fault.
- Go to the Services control panel and start the FAH@[...] service manually (or just reboot).

Viola! One more box is now folding for freedom, happiness and everything that's good in the world. You can change the settings later by editing 'client.cfg' in the F@H directory or running the executable with the '-configonly' flag again (stop the service first).

Hey guys, Im new to the team at The Shroomery but www.hardfolding.com and the hardforum.com team has seen me around.
The longer the units take to do per frame, the more points its worth. If your doing something small at 1min a frame, it is worth only 46 points or so, compared to large ones being in the 250-600 point area. You can have a race for points or work units.
My mother has cancer which has propelled me in to distributed computing especially for the shroomery. Showing the true intentions of the shroomery and how we have the greater good in mind.
Every extra mhz counts.
P4 2.6C w/ 1024mb
800mhz celeron 256mb ram

Soon to add
350mhz p2 / 320mb ram

I do believe my friend is running a 1gh / 384mb of ram machine on team 12679....

I just joined up on the shroomery folding team =) Since my computer does almost nothing on a daily basis =P Might install the client on my  second computer as well when i am done with it.

But jeez it takes me 62 days to finish one WU :eek:

I would recommend that anyone who runs folding@home or is considering it first stress-tests their machine with Prime95 and Memtest86.

Alternatively, you could use updated versions Prime2004 (which has GUI enhancements) and Memtest86+ (which is still updated).

I would recommend doing a torture test in Prime95 (preferably for 24 hours) and a full boot-disk driven memory test in memtest.

Doing these tests will make sure your machine is 100% stable under load (cutting out any chance of folding@home causing system instability), allow you to make sure that your CPU temperature isn't too high under load (which could cause problems if you keep folding@home running for very long lengths of time) and also make sure you don't compromise the folding@home project by contributing bad data from a CPU performing incorrect calculations.

For example, I can run my Athlon 2200+ at over 2Ghz (overclocked to around a 2800+). At this speed, it appears to be totally reliable, passing 3D Mark tests and appearing to operate perfectly. However, it is not prime stable - it gives rounding errors after a few hours - and the CPU temperature builds to a level I am not happy with. If I ran folding@home on my system with this overclock, I could expect system instability and a decreased CPU lifespan. Furthermore, it is very likely that I would regularly contribute bad data to the project. To run folding@home (and also to get full stability) I have to run my CPU at stock or close-to-stock speeds.

If your machine isn't prime stable, you are not helping the folding@home project by running their software. You may be contributing data which is not reliable.
