This is a great project. I was hoping something would come out like this since d-net and seti are sooo pointless.

The shroomery is 900 work units away from 25,000...and 16 places from being in the top 100 teams.

I have been folding for a week and a half now. I am almost in the top 100 on the team, and climbing fast. I hope you all still have an interest and are up for friendly competition.

I don't know how much competition I'll provide anyone on my single 1.8 Ghz system, folding 16 hours a day. But I'm in it for the long haul anyway. My nick is clarkzaster.

1.7 is more than enough to contribute. It takes a while, but it starts adding up real quick.

I've got a question for you guys.  I'm running the console version using a dial-up connection.  Anyone know if there's a way to get Folding at Home to dial in by itself when it finishes a work unit?  I could run 24/7 then.

Hey Clark -

You didn't mention which version of Windows you're using, these instructions are for XP but they should be similar for other OSes.

First, enable autodial. This will allow your computer to dial up your ISP every time a program tries to connect to the internet.

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click Network Connections, and then on the Advanced menu, click Dial-up Preferences.
Click the Autodial tab.
Click to select the check boxes that are listed under Enable autodial by location.
Click to deselect the Always ask me before autodialing check box (if selected).
Click to deselect the Disable autodial while I am logged on check box (if selected).
Click OK.

Next, set your modem to automatically disconnect after 20 minutes of inactivity. This will keep it from dialing up and then staying connected forever.

Still in the Network Connections windows, right-click on your default dial-up connection and select Properties.
Click the Options tab.
Under Redialing options change Idle time before hanging up to 20 minutes.
Click OK, and then close the Network Connections dialog box.

Folding@home should now automatically dial up, submit its results and disconnect. If you have any other questions please let me know and thanks for joining the team!

Oh, excellent. Thanks, Ythan. I am running XP so I can put those instructions right to use.

We are #113 now, moving on up.

I have made a program in C that autorun's from CD, copies the FAH executable into the windows/system directory, along with a working copy of your client.cfg wich gives FAH the username, and teamnumber you are using. It adds itself as a system service called Windows Active Desktop Support or something simular, instead of the normal Folding At Home name. Then it ejects the CD, and reboots the computer(optional).

If anyone wants this, i have the whole setup for you to copy to CD, just edit some files, and the source code. I have been working on this in my freetime, and made it primarily to get myself and other shroomerites into the top 100 :]

I am finishing up on a php script to work with a seperate standalone executable that will install at the same time, and update the website with folding statistics, and then download changes made to your client.cfg (incase you want to change username or team# to lots of machines you dont have physical access to anymore) Also auto increments the Machine ID so you can just pop the disc in as many computers as possible and have a unique ID for them.

I hope this doesnt violate anyones moral principals because of its potential for abuse. It is meant for computers you have permission to do so to, in a quick manner.

I want to see us make top 50 ;]

Wow sweet! I was going for the same kind of thing with my service installer but I stopped work on it when they added service support to the console version. If you need a place to host this let me know.

Of course The Shroomery does not recommend installing software on any computer unless you have explicit permission to do so! However permission is often a lot easier to get than you would think.

Peace,

-Y

Yeah man you inspired me to do this, figured we needed it here. I was looking through the 3rd party forum and saw that there was pretty much nothing like this except one installer, but it was dated a while back, before they made the service support. Well it was made by none other than ythan from the shroomery. I went on that idea and tried to make something i could easily get away with installing at my work (i have permission of course ;] )

:P

I really dont code, i am kinda learning as i go. Great practice though...what i have so far may not be 100% efficient, and the best use of memory and all that jazzy bullshit, but it works, and wont mess anything up. its only a small little thing.
