Interesting, I completed one WU (400/400) and I got 239 points, whereas others have completed 1 WU and got as low as .29 points.

*edit: found the points calculator.

I just installed F@H on a second computer

But it won't do much help with it's 633 MHz processor ...

Every bit helps... I have a 450 MHz processor crunching away... only does about 1 WU per week, but 1 is better than 0.

(replying to noone in particular)

I have a question about the textual version of F@H. Can I close the window it is running in? or will it not continue to fold?

The console version of FaH will stop running if you close its window. To get around this, you can either use the service installer (for NT/2K/XP) or a program like Hide-It! (for 95/98/ME).

sooo...since I use Seti@home ... would I be able to run folding@home also? And if I could would it be too much for my computer?

Technically it's possible to have Seti and FaH installed at the same time, they both run at idle priority so in theory they would each get half of your CPU's spare cycles. However if you're running Windows 95, 98 or ME your OS may have problems with multitasking and I would strongly recommend running one or the other. Regardless, you'll use the same amount of CPU time (100%) either way.

Helping people or finding aliens....hmmmmmmmmmm...choices choices choices!

Look at it this way: the chance of actually detecting an alien signal is extremely miniscule and 99.999999% (or possibly 100%) of all results will simply end up being thrown out. With FaH, every result you return is useful and helps scientists cure disease and better understand biology.

Again, thanks everyone for helping out.

Yea, Seuss, you're going down... downtown to Chinatown!

Regardless, I'll have a few rigs set up by the end of the summer, for folding only.

What I have in mind is a Celeron 1700 MHz and hopefully a P4 2000 MHz mobile.

Heck, I may even start a mini-farm:

Blame the blokes over at Stanford for choosing the wrong school... not your fault.

The SETI project has a huge payoff, but a very tiny chance of success.  The folding project has a pretty large payoff, but a much greater chance of success.  The various brute force password cracker projects are just a waste of time (duh, if we try every possible combination, one of them should work...).

I can't get the service installer to work. It just says failed to start and failed to start #2. Then it tells me it was not installed correctly. I'm connected to the internet and I have admin account. xp 2.8 ghz p4... What am I doing wrong?

I'm now having the same problem as Tommy, on XP, using the service starter.
the service says it's supposed to be starting a file named "C:\Program Files\Folding@home\service\srvany.exe" where C:\Program Files\Folding@home\service\ is where I installed to.
Tried downloading during the install as well as pointing to the already existing client.

I then found the file in a folder called 2 within the above path and moved it to the main dir.  The service then returned a message stating "The Folding@home service on Local Computer started then stopped.  Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example, the Performance Logs and Alerts service."

I'll run it in the system tray for now, but I would like to be able to use the service to hide it from being killed.

/edit: How will running Electric sheep conflict with F@H?  Will ES take up whatever it needs and F@H gets leftovers?

/edit2: The GUI tray version is running only at 50%, refuses to go higher.  Dunno why

blinkidiot: You need to install two versions of the Console in order to full utilize hyperthreading. Instructions are on the FAH site.

I guess that cuts using the service installer out of the picture...

Actually blinkidiot, there's a few programs out there (if you're a geek forum user like myself) which are extremely useful. I.e. EMIII, FALogstats, etc. The best one in my opinion is One-Click. It lives up to its name; click it once and you're folding, never have to worry about it again. The only downside to that is uninstalling it; as it does register as a MS Windows service.

I currently use EMIII to monitor my FAH programs on both my 3,6 and 2,8. Do a google search for EMIII. This way, you can also hide those FAH4Console.exe from cluttering up your taskbar (it's in the options). I'll see if I can update this in the FAH page.
