LInux program install trouble

I'm trying to install Limewire,but I could running into this error message:

Extracting the installation resources from the installer archive...
Configuring the installer for this system's environment...
No Java virtual machine could be found from your PATH
environment variable. You must install a VM prior to
running this program.
.
I know for a fact I have Java runtime environment installed in /usr/bin/java.

Anybody know what that error message means exactly or how to rectify the problem? Any help would be appreciated (I'm still fairly new to Linux).

btw, usr/bin/java IS in your path ISN'T it...

try updating your java client

type this at cli:

java -version

know that usr/bin/java is a symlink
etc/alternatives should contain the absolute path

I just got Java installed,so I know it's the newest version,and those online tests at Java.com says it's up and running.

I used the command: PATH=$PATH:/usr/bin/java

and then I did: echo $PATH
and it's in there,but it I'm still getting that message after I run the command: ./LimeWireLinux.bin

was this SUN's java? it does make a difference if it is not

also, i was trying to tell you that you may have to:

A) add the absolute path to your VM which will be something like /usr/lib/j2re.... try grep java to find it

or

B) manually symlink /usr/bin/java to the absolute path to your VM

Cool. I just fucked around with my PATH environment variable a little and got it working. Thanks much.

I know this is really annoying newbie stuff,but how do I delete stuff in the environment variable? (Can you give me the correct syntax for that?) I put in all kinds of garbage that I don't need. I don't have any Linux/Unix books handy at the moment.

check /etc/profile

IIRC, path env vars are not permanent, IOW a reboot will possibly break your JVM again... depending on what you did to get it working.

for permanent changes you want the env vars set in /etc/profile

i'm a bit unclear as to where, specifically, you should enter these vars but IME at the end works.

I got it installed,but after I rebooted Limewire wouldn't launch,but now I know why- I didn't mess with /etc/profile.

Everything's gravy now. Thanks a lot.
