i hear ya - the thing that pisses me off most about websites that only like IE is most government websites that use forms require you to use IE fueling the monopoly even more... I would expect government sites to be designed to work with any browser...

I've been using linux since a long time, maybe 5 or 6 years.
I really hate Windows since. I need to boot my windows partition
for things like gaming. (in fact, only gaming).

Except for the games, I can always find a (lot of) linux programs (free) that does what I want.

I've used Red Hat for my 4 first years but now i'm using Debian and
it's definitely better. apt r0cks !

I'm using a Debian derivative called LibraNet. It's excellent, but the newest version is non-free. (I have the free 2.7 version, which works great.)

I recommend Debian or some derivative thereof, because the package management (APT) blows away everything else.

For newbies, you might try Knoppix for educational purposes. It's a bootable CD distro that requuires no installation, it just automatically detects hardware.

so what's the deal with linux?  or ?

I have been using RedHat 9 (Shrike) for the past 2 month's approx and I have been loving it.  I program in C  for a living so making the conversion has not been too much of a problem.  Games like Quake and Unreal Tournament run way better ( Quake 3 Arena fps WinXP:75/100  fps Linux:150/175)  My computer is more stable, it does not reboot by itself, and can run 4/5 day's with p2p programs and watching video's occasionally before it need's a reboot.  Plus it compiles my c  project's faster.  I would say give it a shot if you don't mind reading the man file's.

Here's some quick input:

Install Linux first and use LILO (you'll learn soon enough) as your bootloader. I think WinXP can be the first install but setting up Linux afterwards is considerably more difficult.

Checkout Gentoo Linux. It has decent documentation and an excellent insatll which isn't too difficult to attempt but is a great learning tool to introduce you to how Linux works.

Get a book. IME, a Unix book (For Dummies?) gives you a better perspective than a Distro-specific one. Most Distros are pretty much the same in function but differ wildly in method.
