Folding at home
    #3635212 - 01/16/05 04:24 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Do I only need to run it once on a single processor machine?

I have 1 machine dedicated 100% to it, how can i maximize efficiency?

you can still use your computer with @home installed, it just takes over the idle CPU cycles if you aren't doing anything else.

So the answer is, run as few programs as nessescary and don't use your computer to maximize efficency. I'm not sure what the differences are between OSes

well I have a FreeBSD and a windows98 box 100% dedicated to this. I dont use them for anything else. The website says I can run m ultiple clients from diffrent directories...is this desirable? Or will 1 client work 100%?

No.
Run 1 client at a time on each machine.

The exception to this is if you have a Pentium 4 CPU with Hyperthreading. In that case, you will see increased performance by running 2 installations of the client.

I have hyperthreading processor, and want to run two copies of this becuase with one copy at max, my processor is only at 50%.

I tried installing a second copy of @home into a new directory, but it wouldn't let me run it at the same time as the first.

I found this on the website:
Q-Can I run both the screen saver and console version at the same time? What happens if I run two console versions at the same time?

A-Instead, run the install program twice into each directory. If you have already copied the program into multiple directories and are trying to run it, find the client.cfg file and delete the "userid=xxxxxxxx" line. Next time it connects to F@H, it should reset the client.cfg file, and all should be well.

I found the .cfg file, but there is no userid line.. there is a username line, which i deleted but it still only lets me do one at a time.

what should i do?

Question:

I have FAH running as a w2k service. I occasionally want to check on the process of it, what do i have to do? Can i run the client from the same dir, or will that cause massive errors and corruption?

Also, when i reboot, with it running as a service, will i lose alot of data, or will it save it?

You should appear on the stats list shortly after submitting your first work unit. It's possible their site is just slow to update, but if its been 48 hours something could be screwy. What's your FAH username?

To view the service's status check out unitinfo.txt in the FAH directory. FAHlog.txt and MyFolding.html may also be of interest. I wouldn't recommend running the graphic client from the same directory, although it might work if you stopped the service first.

Also, FAH saves its progress periodically and can be closed at any time. So don't sweat those reboots!

Thanks for joining our team and helping out this great cause!

endokrin -

Sorry I somehow missed your post. This is what I would do to set up FAH on your system.

First, uninstall the current client. This is necessary because by default it stores its configuration in the registry. In order to run 2 clients, they must store their configuration in seperate files.

Next, download the console version of FAH. You will want to place a copy of this file in 2 seperate directories (i.e. "c:\Program Files\Folding@home\Client 1" and "c:\Program Files\Folding@home\Client 2").

Launch the first copy of the console. Enter your name and team number (12679 hopefully ). Answer "yes" when it asks if you want the console to launch automatically on system startup (it will run as a service so it won't interfere with your use of the computer). Most of the other options are self-explanatory and you can accept the default values if you're unsure. However, the "Machine ID" is important for setting up multiple copies of FAH. Each installation needs a different ID, so specify "1" when you're setting up the first copy of the client and "2" when you're setting up the second copy.

Once you've configured both instances of the console, reboot your computer to start the services or do it manually through the services control panel. You should now be set and FAH will use all available spare CPU cycles.

Thanks for helping with this project and for going to the trouble to set it up with Hyperthreading!

-Y

I just joined up myself. Im crunching on three machines so far.

If I could find a way to bring a session into work and run it on our unix cluster, i could put up some killer numbers. Its impossible to get around the firewall at work though. I would have to bring it in on a usb key or something.
