Fall 2005 PNW edible finds
    #4721700 - 09/27/05 06:39 PM (18 years, 6 months ago)

Didn't want to step on Gumby's actives thread with edibles. The mrs and I went to the central cascades yesterday, and it looks like the season is just starting. Here's a few pics. Most of the oysters were just pinning, but there were a few larger ones, and a few that I brought home to clone. The tooth fungus is our favorite. The largest one was over 3 pounds. Lots of ganoderma species growing now as well. The below bolete is the non-edible type, but still a nice one to look at. We're supposed to get a week of rain starting on Thursday, so hopefully within the next two weeks, the edibles will be out in full force.

Nice stuff. BTW, the oysters are likely to be Pleurocybellas instead of Pleurotus. There was a rash of possible poisonings last year from some of those, so they should be eaten with caution (it wasn't taken too seriously as a threat, but it never hurts to be cautious).

I especially like the Hericium.

Happy mushrooming!

That outbreak was isolated to Japan wasn't it?
I've eaten them many times and every field guide I've ever seen has listed them as edible.

I know you're just playing the cautious mod looking out for everyone.

Everyone around here eats the angel wings. They're edible for sure. One of the very best oysters, imo.

Yes, the outbreak was in Japan. I also understand that those involved had additional factors (such as being kidney transplant recipients). So, yes, I'm just being a bit overcautious. I very seriously doubt anybody will get sick from eating them, but being cautious costs little.

Happy mushrooming!
