Uber Chanterelle find(PICS)
    #1713363 - 07/14/03 01:44 AM (20 years, 11 months ago)

I've been searching for Chanterelles for a while with no avail. I finally went down the area where LK told me the new Psilocybes grow and I found two seperate patches and ended up finding around 3 lbs of them. Sorry if this post sounds a bit garbled... been drinking a bit :wink:

Here's muh pics:

Above= uncleaned mushrooms

Below= cleaned mushrooms:

Some other pictures:

Chanterelle veins/gills.

Picture perfect Chanterelle.

Big ass Chanterelle.

Now that I'm done with the pictures it's time to go drink another beer and cook some mushrooms. Hellz yeah.

Man, that is quite a find!!!!!

Its weird how they are so different over there than they are here in the west coast. They like cool weather here too, and over there its a lot warmer.

Ours are big, but, those look beautiful! :laugh:

This morning I threw some in an omelet with some cheese and jalapenos. I also sauteed some in butter with salt and garlic... they're damn good.

I'd say they're my 2nd favorite edible so far. Morels win the prize.

I've got some drying in the oven as we speak :smile:

Next time it rains I'm gonna hit the patches up again and try to locate a few new ones.

They were growing under various hardwoods.

I went for a walk in my backyard today thinking it would be favorable for Chanterelle growth... Look what I found...

2 Chanterelles and 1 Lactarius. The Lactarius had an orange cap and I thought for a second that it was a Chanterelle, then I thought it was a Jack O Lantern. Once I saw the milk come from the gills, that gave it away.

Here's how to tell if you've got a Chanterelle:

They've got veins, not gills.

Here's how to tell you've got a Lactarius:

If the gills are cut/damaged a milky fluid will come out of them.

those look good man, I have a question: where do those grow and on what substrate? I want to get into hunting edibles.

Remy is working on writing up a Chanterelle hunting guide for the FAQ right now. But I'll go ahead and give ya a few pointers.

They like hardwood forests from what I've seen. A few pine trees here and there is alright but they like predominately hardwood forests. They LOVE growing on steep hill sides. Don't waste too much time looking on flood planes, I havent found any on flood planes. I've also noticed that they tend to grow on hillsides next to some kind of body of water. I found my first patch on a very steep hill next to a creek. The second patch was found on a steep hill next to a swamp/bog/giant puddle of water. The thrid patch(one in my back yard) is on a hill next to a creek.

So there's your pointers, hopefully you'll be able to find them. I'm not sure what species grows in your area, but if it's the same species we have here, you can't miss them... they're bright orange for christ's sake :wink:

nice! my grandparents have chanerelles that grow in their yard... i think it's way too hot here for that right now... and dry. I'm currently on the lobster mushroom trail myself, with mixed results. your pics are very inspirational, and the close ups of chants vs. lacts are really helpful. The lact that you found, is it a possible lobster mushroom host? i know that some lacts are effected, but i've only found it on russulae. it's not that important that i know, as i haven't been able to identify lacts around here, just curious... :-)

I'm not sure if it's a possible host or not. I've yet to find the lobster mushroom but I am constantly finding Russlas and Lactarius... I've gotta remember to keep an eye out for those things.
