Beautiful find! S. ambigua, H. aurantiaca, L. procera
    #1174409 - 12/27/02 09:06 PM (21 years, 1 month ago)

I found these specimens on Christmas day in my backyard.

From left to right: Stropharia ambigua, Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca, and Lepiota procera.

Stropharia ambigua = Questionable Stropharia. This specie is not thought to be poisonous but is far from a culinary specie. One report likens its taste to that of old leaves. This particular specimen is fairly old but a beauty none the less.

Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca = False Chanterelle. This specie is not a culinary specie. It can be differentiated from a true chantrelle by the presence of true gills. Chanterelles have structures that resemble gills but are more like ridges.

Lepiota procera = Parasol Mushroom. This is a great edible. According to Aurora it is "..one of the very best of all agarics!" I will saute this one in some virgin olive oil.

Joshua
