75quart single tubs w/ PICS!

Well I finally got some batteries for my camera... it's been 5 days since spawning the tubs, each one has 4 inches of substrate.  I used 8 quarts of spawn total for all 3 (so like 2.66 for each)... Basically mixed all 3 tubs worth of stuff in one bin, then hand distributed it over into the separate ones.  I was wonderin how they look so far... opinions eh eh? :smile:

Close up:


Notice in the close-up the water buildup on the myc/rhizo?  Is this a problem?  All the tubs are incubating at room temp (around 70F) and have no external humidification, just what god gave them through the substrate.  It seems to be doing pretty good, but I think the longer incubation time (over 5 days) is mainly because of the temperature.  So yeah, what's the input, hrmm?

I followed eatyualive's double tub tek but strayed from it just a bit.  I put 60 cups verm, 60 cups unscreened worm castings, and 4 quarts of compacted straw mixed in with one gallon of water, and mixed it all up to hell by hand in one tub.  Then distributed that into 5 roasting pans and put them in the oven at 185F for 2.5 hours (covered in like 4 layers of tin foil of course).  I let it sit and cool overnight, then put it all back in the tub (wiped down with rubbing alcohol).  Then I wiped down a spoon with rubbing alcohol, and gave my hands a quick bath of it and let it all dry off, and started cracking open my spawn --- 8 quarts of creeper on rye (and I hope it was all creeper... stupid me forgot to label my jars and i might have gotten mixed spawn with PESH... we'll see though, I know better for next time).

Also, I have a few quarts of spawn still sitting in my tub-in-tub and I feel real bad for the stuff, wanting to be free and grow... So I was going to make a PMP with one of my extra tubs (got a bunch at wal-mart for 5 bucks a pop, had to stock up!)... would the worm castings/verm/straw mixture work on a smaller scale (zip-lock deep dish trays)?  Or should I cut out the straw?  I'm still new to all this casing mumbo jumbo, dunno what works and what doesn't, but I guess I can only learn by doing :wink:

Very nice indeed, but I have a question. Where is your poly-fill? Also wanted to know if you are using the actual Double Tub tek, or just Eatualive's recipe for spawn? Your thread indicates that this is a single tub and you used the recipe for spawn.

I was wondering how you are going to be achieving air exchange without the poly-fill? Do you plan on fanning manually?

I don't mean to be crass, so don't take any of this the wrong way. I just don't want people thinking this is the Single Tub tek when it looks like the only thing about the tek you used is a single tub.

Your results look very good.

Oh... well... I guess I should have explained that a bit. I don't have the means as of now to get holes in the side of my tub, so there will be no aireation (spelling? heh) at substrate level... However in the lid of each tub there are 4 holes, and I was planning on using a fan to circulate some air into the closet once a day when fruiting time comes. When this is all done I'll post a grow log with an list of things I'd do differently and such (like putting the garbage bag inside of the tub, and not the outside. Come to think about it, when fruiting time comes I am likely going to just wrap the sucker in tin foil). Here's some pics:

i wodner if the holes in the lid will be sufficient in order of creating an air circulation.
i would advise you to add holes at substrate level aswell,
it could work with just your holes in the lid
but i must say that i am pretty negative about it..

anyway, best of luck.

you are not going to remove the lid at all till fruiting or what are your plans?

Aye.. well.. For now the CO2 buildup isn't anything to worry about, but I'm not too sure what I'm going to do at fruiting. I could just take off the lid and manual-fan it but that'd defeat the whole purpose of the "mono-tub" tek. It would just be your normal ol bulk grow. What I might do, in the name of science... is fan two of them manually... and just "see what happens" with the third tub, and sacrifice it to the gods of chance! :p I'll have to ponder it a while.

why try and risk contams / improper fruiting if you know
that by adding couple more holes youll get some lovely fruits?

i'd just add the holes ..

Well that's the problem, I have no means of adding them, or I definately would add them.  I tried cutting the holes with a knife and ended up cracking two tubs thus ruining them :frown: It was a sad day for tubs.  I don't have the 40 bucks to go buy a rotary tool til payday, and I'm not sure if I should cut holes with colonized substrate in there.. don't want plastic dust all over the place.  Anyway, that's why I was asking for ideas on cuttin holes in tubs the other day :p But yah, we'll see how it goes, I'm up for experimentation, I've got plenty of supplies to try stuff out. :smile: Ideas? :P

First melt a hole using a knife and a lighter..I use a salvation ary knife, the wood saw on it. A soldiering iron works as well. Or just a lighter to melt the plastic then a metal tool/knife to push it out. The plastic shreds shouldnt hurt the substrate, but put a peice of plastic or foil over it while you do it. I'd at least put 4 polyfil holes in the lid, in each corner (to the center a smidge, so they're evenly around), if you dont want to/cant add the holes at the substrate level.

you can just heat a knife till glowing and shove through the plastic.
dont move it in order to cut a circle,
but like melt in bit after bit after bit.

i know its tedious but it will give you a nice hole after about 10 "meltings"
and it wont crack a bit.

easiest way for me is to just put a screw driver on the stove for about 5 minutes, then push it through slowly. The plastic will be cut in a perfect circle, then will harden. Stuff with poly-fill and your set!

Since we are talking about melting holes in the plastic, you could go to Home Depot and pick up a small piece of 3/4 inch electrical pipe. Heat the pipe up and the pipe will make a perfect hole everytime.

By the way, cutting a hole after you have your substrate in there is just fine. I actually didn't even cut my holes until after my spawn was fully colonized my first time with the Single Tub tek. The plastic shredded all over the substrate, but didn't cause any problems. Just cut and stuff each one at a time.

I've used a soldering iron to make holes. Cheap and easy.
