HOLY SH*T! Where did you get the cow poo? My friend is about to do something like that but can only get cow poo at walmart. How did you keep humidity up? And also the same Q's as spawn. How did you get the pooo to colonize, and how did you sterilize it?

Thanks for the encouraging comments. I will post a tek with a few pictures within the next 12 hours. The good news is sterilisation
of the manure is not nessacary, and the tek is very simple and requires very little equipment.

This tek works on the basis that mycelium grows naturally on cow manure without sterilisation and owes its success to imitating the shrooms environment by using its natural substrate, makes sense to me. The bowl above used one , one pint cake and produced 152 g wet on the 1st flush. I am still waiting for the second flush which is pinning now.
Indoor Dung Tek for the above is as follows:
The cow manure must not be too fresh, it must be dry-ish and lumpy. If it is not lumpy, it is too far decomposed and will not work properly. Do not sterilise the manure !
Step One:Break up the substrate into small pieces ( crumbs ) Mix thoroughly an equal amount of colonised substrate ( birdseed or BRF & Verm ) and cow manure in a bucket or other container. Add water so the mixture is damp-wet but not totally sodden.( I mix out doors by the garden tap and use tap water )
Step 2: Add the mixture to a container of your choice , in the example a plastic dogs water bowl was used. One of the secrets of colonizing manure quickly is too keep the mixture light and fluffy, not compressed and keep it thin. 1" or 25 mm seeems ideal but
you can go to 1.5" max once you have the hang of it. Try 3/4 inch thick substrate when you begin. I use seed trays, old floppy disk boxes ( makes a great mini terriaum )
Plastic margarine & ice cream containers etc. If the mixture is too thick it will take too long to colonise and may get cobweb mould before fruiting.
I covered the dogs bowl with tin foil and left in a dark cupboard for a week.
Step 3: After one week I lifted off the tin foil cover and re-positioned it so it covered the bowl about 80% so it kept humidity up but let light and air in, I left the bowl in the kitchen where there is a natural draft and misted it 2 times a day, after about ten days or so pins started to form. Temperatures were constant through out about daytime max 74f or 24c.and night min 44f or 12c
Step 4: I put the bowl in a ( plastic box )terriuam , kept the humidity at about 90-95% most of the time by misting twice a day. Air was supplied by a fish tank bubbler.
The reason why I put it in a terriuam at this stage is I stop misting the surface at this point and only mist the angled perspex in the container so reducing the chance of any contamination by over-wetting the mycelium.

Step 5: 18 days from opening the tin foil I picked my fruits. Hey, I cant wait for the weekend !

The main criteria to success here with this tek, is getting the mycelium to colonize the manure quickly. I f it does and bear in mind it is directly related to substrate thickness,( I mean how thick is a cow shit normally ? ) then the shrooms basically grow themselves and are normally pretty healthy specimens.

This tek is well worth trying, if you are a serious shroomer, you will be abundantly rewarded for your efforts.

It also works well outdoors, in a shallow hole in the ground, depending on temperatures of course.

ps: I have often gotten shrooms by mixing contaminated cakes with cowshit, the cow shit kills the contam and the mycelium lives on to fruit.

Nice pics
I aways use dung in my substrates, and your right about most contams not liking it. Unfortunately, green mold, does like it - but it doesn't even spread as fast on dung,as normal grain sustrates.

fried brains,

where did your spores or culture come from
(which supplier)
also is that overlay on the surface of the mycelium? Do you think casing the substrate would have affected teh shrooms growth?

thanks,

spawny

A few questions. First of all, it looks like you using the cake as a spawn for the cow manure, sort of like azures and cardboard. Could you simply case a crumbled cake with cow manure and continue as a regular casing tek? Do you think the yield would be the same? Lastly, do you have problems with flies in the cow manure? My friend's dog would really like to try this. He unwittingly created spawn jars by using the wrong type of birdseed and hopes to save his batch. Happily, his neighbor has a herd of cattle who would be happy to be unwitting contributors to science.

Spawn, the spores originally came from Smart Botanic's.They do say on thier site that they like manure. Ryche Hawk will also have these spores available soon. I personally feel that in this case, casing may have slowed the process down , increasing chances of contamination. Yes it looks like overlay ., but it didnt seem to hurt in this instance.
Snarf, I am using birdseed cake mixed with manure. I have had problems casing manure, so until I can solve the problems I dont recommend it. A tek you can try is to use a thin layer of manure on top of colonised cakes, sort of using the manure as casing, much like shroom Wizards tek using potting soil as casing. It is not entirely predictable but you can have some fun results.
Jester
I get the manure from a farm, it is already in a pile so I choose the right texture and age, not wet, fresh and smelly, but dry and lumpy ( the next stage ),& crumbly. If it is too far decomposed it can give probs with slow colonization and green mould or cobweb mould.

Snarf. No I havent had too may problems with flies and manure. I once did get a lot of small midge like flies on one batch but they didnt seem to harm the shrooms in any way.

Fried, you are the man. I see what you mean.
Are their syringes cloudy with spores? When you ordered from smart botanics, are you in the USA? Cause it says they wont ship to the usa. Your strain seems one of the largest cultivated ive ever seen, Im wondering if other so called Gulf coast strains from other vendors are those big strains. I personally dont know which state produces the biggest, but from the pics ive seen, it looks like Alabama might have some pretty big ones. Any particular reason you think sterilizing the manure might be a bad idea?

So what abtou the stuff that you can get in a store? I wqould be using shroom wizards tek with verm/flour will this work with this tek? And if i have a say puple contam it is ok to case it with this stuff as long as it doesn't show on the top of it after i am done mixing the cake and cow shit? thnaks
