Praying for the Pope
    #4003393 - 04/02/05 02:29 AM (11 years, 8 months ago)

Even with millions of Catholics worldwide focusing their spiritual energies on his recovery, no affect will be noted. There never is, but this glaring fact does not stop the faithful from holding onto fantasy.

Soon the Pope will be returned to the source, which should bring gladness according to the alleged heavenly rewards that await him. Instead, there are tears and sadness. Once again, the religious demonstrate that they don't even believe what they want others to.

Don't tell me that your concept of prayer is really so fundamentalist. Prayer is a form of meditation. It's most valuable attributes are to clear the mind and strengthen the will.

How exactly would you determine an effect?

I certainly did not "invent" my concept of prayer. I merely react to what is presented to me.

Prayer is a form of meditation. It's most valuable attributes are to clear the mind and strengthen the will.
I have not heard the echo of Catholics asking for a clear mind, but specifically for the Pope's recovery. Seems you are the one putting an unsubstantiated spin on the situation.

Not sure what that tangent has to do with the inefficacy of world-wide prayer.

How did people determine that Christ had the power to heal? That same power is supposed to be available to the faithful, yet it is nowhere to be seen.

If the Pope suddenly rallied how do we determine whether his improvement was due to the positive thoughts of millions or something else?

I don't think the Catholics are praying for him to stay alive anymore. They have seen his suffering, it don't look good, so they know his time has come. There's probably alot of them out there who's prayers are like: "please God let the pope die peacefully and with no pain, and show him the way to your kingdom" or something like that.

Instead of praying, I am trying to help get Medical Marijuana to be legitimized. There is real-world compassion; not kneeling down before candles and mumbling words to an imaginary being.

This is what my girlfriend almost exactly said over lunch break when I told her about this post (I've been poking a lot of fun about the whole thing just to annoy her  ).

Of course, praying for the manipulation of some external event will show no impact on that external event. It will, however, produce internal change and subsequent external change in the actions of those who are praying, but I only really see this as being unintentional. The mechanics of reality play situations out, cause and effect is savior, and divine intervention is unheard of (as I usually don't feel the need to intervene :smirk:).

For the past handful of weeks, the news has been flooded with stories relating to someone who was going to die, but was barely alive in the first place, and another who's age and sickness makes their inevitable death nothing of a shock to us all. Why not focus the mass eye on the deaths occuring every second as a result of certain countries' forces occupying others, and the absolute waste of human life in impoverished nations where steps to prevent birth into nothing are condemned by the dying people we are paying attention to?

What is more important, life itself or meaningful, valuable life? I see no reason to toss starving babies into the desert to die. Our priorites are so out of place that we appear to not be capable of thinking at all, and yet instead of taking important external actions to manipulate world events, we simply half-intend meaningless hope. Whoo-hoo human beings!

:headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :satansmoking:
Peace. :mushroom2:

The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity. ~ Albert Einstein

Praying for his recovery is as illogical as praying for someone to be killed, I don't think these kind of prayers work.
He is an old sick man, it is his time, accoarding to his religion this is the most important and most glorious event in his life.

Too bad there's no way to hook him up to life support and keep his body pointlessly ticking along for another 15 years or so. I'm sure he would have wanted it that way.

Even if it were possible, I'm sure he'd be allowed to just slip away peacefully. No reason why religious mentors should be held to thier own standards, after all.
