Cacti Rot
    #3944911 - 03/20/05 03:52 PM (19 years, 13 days ago)

Here are a few peyote, all of which apparently have some rot. How would someone go about saving them so they don't turn to mush/die? Cut off the top (non-rot area), put it in a sandy soil mix and wait for it to root (that would take a long time though for it to develop a root system).

It could have been over watering.  I only watered them a total of 3 times since I got them late December/early January.  I was pretty sad to see them get like this :frown:.  I didn't realize how bad it was until I took them out of the soil, then I saw the extent of the damage/rot.  I don't have anything right now to graft them to, so I'll probably have to get something quickly (if there is a possibly of saving them somehow).

Go out and buy some columnars! One of them doesn't look too bad but the rot may have moved further up the stem than you can see. No experience with them myself but I don't see rooting them a possibility, that is a large taproot it would be losing.

if there is a will there is a way, the soil you should be using should mostly be sand and pebbles and a bit of soil. The soil should be dry a few days after watering.

the soil around the roots looks like plain potting soil, which is fine to use if where they are growing is very hot. But in most house holds you need a less pourus soil that will drain and dry fast.

due to the extent of the rot, grafting is probably the best, if not only, way to save those.

the walmart and home depot here just got a large shipment of columnar cacti. many of them are great grafting stock. hopefully, spring cactus shipments are also in where you live. check around, see what you can find.

I know the one you're talking about, the other side looks a little worse. The thing is, it feels like a peach that has sat out for too long - pretty soft and mushy. I'll see if Wal-Mart has any cacti I can pick up.

The culprit was probably drainage (or lack of).

You don't need a big cactus to graft onto. A little 4" will do the job.

They don't look rotten to me they look dehydrated. If you've only watered them once a month they're probably just dehydrated. Loph's need a good draining soil, ie. one that dries out in a couple days. With a soil that dies out quickly enough they can be watered twice a week.

Also, if they are dehydrated grafting is likely to fail as well.

Well, my soil drainage was not on par, could have been improved. Also, you say twice a week watering? That goes against pretty much everything I have read on this board, the nook, and other various websites. I know people that have watered peyote once during the entire winter season without any problems. (I was under the assumption) As a general rule of thumb, watering once a month during the winter months is good. If dehydrated, they would get yellow and mushy? - I would think that'd be some type of rot.

They may be dehydrated but only because of the rot, the damaged roots are not supplying the shoot with enough water. Watering more will probably just make it worse. I think grafting may be your best bet.

i could only imagine watering twice a week if only two things were occurring

1: you live in the desert south west and your growing the peyote's in a very small pot and you r temps are in the hundreds and your humidity is like 2 % with thirty mile an hour winds for weeks on end.

2. maybe if your cacti were grafted onto fast growing stock and you had them under H.I.D.'s 24/7, i could see that happening...

and once a month should be o.k for winter, but if they are not draining well they may have stayed wet for days, which could have rotted them. cold temps in a window sill could have encouraged this.

dehydration will simply look like 'pruning' or shriveling,
the yellow mush is rot from most likely over watering,
it sounds like you know you watered them too much,
this is sadly the best way to learn about plants,
by killing them and watching them slowly die,
this makes you examine what you did wrong,
thus ensuring you won't do it again.

i would still try and graft the tops and i would let the bottoms dry and replant them, no reason to chuck the out, peyote is a tough cacti.

and if you don't think you can graft them, eat those bitches! better than a total loss.
when most plants are dying you can't eat them., you just have to watch them die.

Sorry I posted late and drunk and didn't take into account a few things. Doh! I assumed they were in a warm area and growing, if they are dormant they shouldn't receive any water at all. Usually rot is brown/black but the yellow creeping up there is likely bad as well. Dehydration can make the tissue give way like zerozero said "pruning or shrivelling" but it doesn't make it squishy. I'd go ahead and graft the tops and replant the tops like zero said.
To address my earlier comments I actually water every 2-3 days but I have VERY well draining soil, that's under 24hr. flouro lighting and on their own roots. And that does go against what you read (in fact I'm sure I've recommended watering once a week in well drained soil at the nook).  In most situations once a week watering is as much as is safe and more WILL cause rot, I was just meaning to state that once a month watering isn't likely to cause rot during growth unless you have really bad soil. Rot isn't caused by too much water as most people assume but rather by not enough air in the root zone. Good luck Ocean and I hope to see pics of your success.
