I doubt it would hold it tight as well. and the needle method isn't mine actually. they use it on bigger cacti I think. but that mixed with Ookla's method works well

Flat grafting still rules though. here are some grafted lophs about a year apart...
a light fell on it and cut off about half the scion
as you can see it bounced back quite well
and here's my megaheaded bastard, which has now undergone a grafting onto P. torch

Thanks Ookla for the innovative grafting technique, it has proved to work pretty well thusfar...

nice grafts HB yeah teh flat grafting definitely works great with bigger stock. I wanna try some cleft grafts sometime though and see how that works.

I took 100 Pereskiopsis cuttings 4 days ago and put them in moist soil so now I am waiting for them to root and send up shoots to graft to. hopefully the bases don't rot as I usually use the glas of water method. I will post pics tomorrow .... well it looks like at least some of the cuttings got stem rot. I guess moist soil doesn't work so well. now I am gonna have to start my whole Pereskiopsis colection over from just a couple.

so I guess I wont be ready for any contest for a few months at least :-(.

Nice try on the mass peresk propagation! I also have done the same thing though not as big as yours (36 cuttings) and found if you use an airy soil mixture and let it dry between waterings you can get a 100% success rate on rootings. It also helps to wait a few more days for the wound on the peresk cuttings to callous up.
Your collection is wonderful and inspiring, I really <3 the monster peyote. I have some williamsii seeds that I can dream of someday looking like yours. Someday... Anyways, peace! Goodluck on the future contests!

yeah I should have let them callous and used airy soil. I have seen many Pereskiopsis root on top of dry soil when I cut offshoots off.

ok update... Octavius has lost a few of it's legs. Two of the Pereskiosis have died off. But I did bring it outside a month ago and now it is out of dormancy and starting to grow fast. So fast theres a bunch of new growth thats white in color. At leats it was a few days ago. also... I did 3 test pin grafts a few pages back of this thread... the tiny one died of course. It was way too small. the other two took and are now growing well. I used no humidity tent or dome at all either. the pins held the graft tight. the cacti skin did however turn very brown around the pin wound. I will post pics tomorrow.
I think the pin method definitely helps tighten the vascular connection though

ok heres an update. I just impale grafted a Juuls giant that was severely etoliated. I used a spine from a Stetsonia to hold it in place....

and heres a flat graft compared to an impale graft....

the impale grafts get fatter and the success rate is much higher for me. did I mention you dont need a humidity dome for impale grafts???
