you don't have to cut it off for a few years after grafting.  the core after time gets woody at the graft and also the graft will get too big for the Perskiopsis rootsystem to feed well. the growth will slow down. I am sending you a Terscheckii graft I did a few years ago thats still putting on new growth though and doesn't need to be seperated yet. If the Pereskiopsis stem shrivels up like a raisin though it is time. Sometimes that happens because the Pereskiopsis loses it's leaves. I think the Terscheckii is keeping the Pereskiopsis alive though. When the grafts are to small for photosynthesis and the Pereskiopsis has no leaves for photosynthesis the Pereskiopsis will die.

it doesn't require much practice really, but yeah it is a good idea to at least get familiar with the process on some seedlings that you have alot of and are not so rare...

So just for clarification . .

One grafts a slow growing cacti to a pereskiopsis, and after a few years the cacti must be separated from the peres because it can no longer support the cacti?

If this is the case, would it be possible to use the octavius method to supplement a slow growing cacti's roots, without ever having to detach the pereskiopsis?

Or would the peres still get too much taken from it to remain attached?

something like that...
pereskiopsis is not a great long term stock, for 2 or 3 years it is fine, but after that when it has lost all of its leaves it will eventually die or become too weak to support the scion...
it is great for seedling grafts as it gives such explosive growth to start with, after a while it loses its vigor somewhat and you are better off regrafting to a columnar stock or simply cut the scion off and allow it to root and grow on its own.
