Pereskiopsis Grafts

At last I've managed to make a couple of successful grafts onto Pereskiopsis. The oldest graft is about 2 weeks old and the scion grew well for about a week but now growth seems to have tapered off as 2 branches/stems have grown from below the graft. I suspect that these are taking the water/nutrients which otherwise would've gone to the scion as they have shot up. Is it ok to cut off the 2 branches? Actually I did this last night but I want to get an idea of whether it was a good idea or not. Also will branches continue to emerge all the time there is a graft on the Pereskiopsis? Do I just have to keep watching & cutting down any branches?

Yeah, I use a small pair of scissors, and I pull the leaves out as soon as they form, and a little bit of the stem under the leaves pops out as well, and the branch is no more.
