it has never done anything positive for this world. it has only created deep chasms of hatred and ignorance between different groups, cultures, and nations.
religion is a shame, if god truely loved us he would never have been

That reminds me of the old Jew joke that God led the world's "chosen people" around the desert for forty years to leave them in the only place without oil.

god is not necessarily false, its just our human reaction to his possible existence that leaves a lot to be desired.

Religion does good things for people...the major religions and those whom controll them do not...Just the word religion does not mean ONLY the five major religions(by majority of followers).
It is interesting to relized the ones whom did the best advertising/public relations are the ones with the most followers...They are also the ones whom upset/kill the most people...that is because of their"aggresive" follower gathering methods...where the ones that preach acceptance are the least regarded...
So it seems in order to be popular you must preach non-acceptance and hate hidden behind a thin veil "Love is good"(but lets kill the bastards whom wont accept our power)...how sad...i guess this non-acceptance thing appeals to the humans....

I am not a religious person, in fact I dont believe in god.. However most religious famelies and religious people are good people.. They do good in life and are happyier than most. Of corse not all religious people are like this but most...
I am lucky to be trained as a Kosher Butcher and through working in Kosher meat markets with all strictly jewish people I have grown to really admire religious finatics for their restraint and commitment to a way of life..

Heyo!
Im new in this forum, but I couldnt help but throw my .02 into this thread. Its just a hypothesis i have, but i hope someone can relate to my ideas in some way...
My beleifs about religion are to my knowledge somewhat unique. Over the years, after constant meditating onthe subject ive come the the conclusion that the human race itself, more specifically, the human spirit is the basis for all religios beleifs.
One may argue that the various religions throughout the world contrast one another or segregate the human race according to what we believe. While this may be true in modern times, i think that in the past religion has united far more people that have been segregated. Consider the development of human societies. With the development of the first human settlements came religious beleifs in some form or another. Theses beleifs were created by the human instinct to discover all we can about our world and define our existance. The very same motives are behind the creation of every single religion world wide. While examining these religions in depth, you can easily see that the same major themes run through each of them. Understanding, life values, the determination to survive and learn, the cycle of life, creation, and ultimately death are held dear to EVERYONE throughout the world.
We have come to a point in time when the various religions throughout the world are in direct contact with one another. Throught personal flaws in their character, many custodians of these various religions promote indifference to other religions and resistance. Many have taken religion, a device which I believe was created by mankind to unite mankind, and instead used it as one would a national banner- something to divide the population and promote the imagined differences between "Us and Them."
I for one think that the future of humanity rests on our ability to recognize WHY we create religion rather than focus on the minute details of who follows what. Human history has seen the metamorphisis of basic religions to suit the needs of individual cultures. The details have changed, but the overall message is still the same- were looking to define US and the world we live in. "God" doesnt live in the sky, or anywhere else for that matter- "God" lives in the hearts and souls of every one of us. We just have to listen.

Well put, captain.
Beliefs unite, and beliefs divide. We must all develop tolerance of other belief systems by recognizing that before there were the thought-systems and organizational structure that glue organized religions together, there was absolute unity.
It is the jobs of all men to recognize how we are one and to set aside that which divides.
