Re: Affirmations: Summation [Re: Ped]

Paramahansa Yoganada single-handedly brought yoga to the USA in the 1930s. He taught diet, breathing (pranayama), positive affirmations and meditation. He died at a relatively young 59 years and was overweight and had major circulatory problems for years. Too much positive thinking...?

My dad is quite negative, lives on a western diet and doesn't know what an asana is. His meditation is TV. At 75, he could out-swim most members here. Guess he better change his mindset.

I was thinking bout this cuz- my dad sounds like yours- he's 68. We joke around that the miser will live to be over a 100.

Anyway,

These thoughts ran through my head.

Negative people tend not to give a rats ass about much as in 'what other people think of them" (this conserves a lot of vital energy others burn through putting on pretenses)

Negative people tend to not hold in their negativity for the sake of putting on fala la pretenses and tend to disharge it on to those around them. (this probably keeps them more free of toxins then the neighbor lady who runs around with a smile and good cheer fearful not to upset anyone or weight them with her problems, who is hiding and repressing years of piss and vinegar eating her alive from the inside out)

Just a couple of random thoughts that ran through my head I thought were interesting to consider and put on the table.

I also have wondered why the shroomery doesn't have a "venting forum". Most of us know that it is healthy to vent and many don't out of fear of being negative or spreading negativity. I suggest people scream into pillows when no one is home if they need to. I'll make a suggestion in the suggestions forum for a venting forum.

One more thing I considered I want to hear opinions on. Is making a conscious choice to think and be positive an act derived from lack beleifs? If so- is the lack underneath the choice for positivity acting like a hidden enemy?

If all is truly well, as many "spiritualists" beleive, being positive should NOT have to be an active choice one makes. Just ran through my head, I have no conclusions on any of this, just stuff from left field to consider.

What is the charge of our natural disposition anyway? I don't beleive it to be neutrality, thats an active choice too and weather people realise it or not "pay attention next time ya do), they probably first have to stuff a lot causing blocks deep below, be it positive or negative energy for neutrality to come to the conscious fore front.

Anyone want a stick of gum?

As usual, you put your focus on the one example that doesn't directly contradict your point of view, supplement it with unknowns or unlikelihoods, and present it as refutation of the point which you see quite clearly, but refuse to address. You'll probably accuse me of something similar before this thread drops off as well.

"Another study of three thousand heart disease patients at Duke University Medical Center found that those who lacked a spouse or close confidant were on average less hopeful for their longevity, and three times more likely to die within five years of the diagnosis of heart disease as those who reported that they derrive emotional strength from their loved ones."

This study directly addresses the mindstate of it's participants, and links their mindstate to the results. That was the purpose of the study. It is the subject of the book it was quoted from. It's highly unlikely that researchers at Duke would be so absent minded as to ignore unhealthy coping mechanisms such as drinking or drug use. It's also unreasonable to assume that every one of these three thousand heart disease patients, a great number of which are no doubt in their fifties and sixties, have a very active sex life. Note that it is not specified in the accounts that sexual relationships were the only type of intimacy experienced by the participants of the study. In fact, it is explicitly mentioned that "more social support" is the determing factor in the patient's mental state.

What's this? Anecdotal evidence coming from Swami? Are you off your game?

Jim Fixx, the famous vegetarian jogger who made millions selling books and video cassettes about healthy living died at an early age of a heart attack while jogging on his normal morning routine. Does this mean that we should dismiss the benefits of a healthy diet and exercise? Of course it does not. That would be illogical, especially considering all the evidence suggesting that diet and exercise promote physical health and longevity.

So should we scoff at the notion that a more positive mental state might contribute to a more healthy physical state simply because one famous yoga instructor died young and with physical ailments? Of course not. That would be illogical, especially considering the evidence suggesting that a more positive mental state contributes to a more healthy physical state.

Here is some of that evidence:

"After interviewing thousands of people, the various investigators all seem to have reached the same conclusion: close relationships promote a stronger sense of well being, and in turn, physical health."

Notice here that the word used was "promote", not "ensure" or "garauntee". I'm not asking you to accept that positive thinking is an absolutely reliable treatment for any kind of illness, Swami, I'm asking you to accept that positive thinking does have the potential to bear an impact on one's overall state of physical wellbeing.

For the second time, you are not comparing those with an intimate relationship AND a positive attitude and those with an intimate relationship and those with a negative attitude.

The study is attributing their increased health to their more positive attitude, and their positive attitude is attributed to their social support base. What it is that's sustaining the positive attitude is irrelevant. The effect is clear.

ah this is my favourite part of swami talk... it happens after about 20 previous posts... He will ignore 99% of what other people say, choosing a single line at a time to respond to.... he will 'fail to understand' your point at all costs.

I was entertaining the same thought- can you really find a casual correlation between stress and positivity? It reads intutive at first, but perhaps forcing yourself to maintain a positive outlook unto the world creates more stress than allowing yourself to be negative, if that is your impetus? any thoughts?

Ped, me boy, I am so proud of you! Finally some of the lessons are getting thorugh. Now if you could only be so vigilant when someone posts an idea that you agree with using equally dubious methods.

Swami said:
Not to Frog: I find the usual irony in that many of those who propose "Being in the Moment" fail to see how this is contradictary to "projecting the future".

There are three basic mindsets:

1. Oh shit, I am going to die!

2. I can beat this thing. I know I can!

3. I do not know what the outcome will be, but I am alive now.

2 & 3 are light-years apart. 1 & 2 are similar in that they are both projections.

Indeed, indeed. To someone who has in their mindset #3, their disease is an aspect of reality which is to be completely accepted. Their body's immune system will do what it can to combat the disease, projecting will not help anything. By living in the moment and accepting reality and the state of change of reality, not only are they enjoying every moment and aspect of their experience, but they are also conserving more energy for their body to perform its necessary tasks to resist the disease. The body does not need to be told what to do.

There is so much generalization, misinformation, and misunderstanding on this thread that a rational, agreed upon answer is not possible. Swami, you keep changing the point you are trying to make which makes it useless to argue. You must be specific and to the point instead of just being vague about what you are getting at.

I missed this post somehow ocean. must've been a lot going up at once. I was actually bumbed to think NO ONE understood what I was considering.

Sounds to me like you are on the same wavelengths as this one. Maybe we should start a separate post on this to toss it around some more. It's got merit worth looking at.

Please quit hitting quick reply when you are addressing others! :inlove:

It leads to confusion. I know swami said it and it wasn't me in this case, sometimes I am not sure if people are addressing me or not when they hit quick reply. It also confuses the reader if they think some else said something and then they take off on that. LOL

Like we don't have enough confusion around here already! :crazy2:
