is civil revolt possible in industrialized nations?
    #3304212 -

could there ever be another american revolution without there
being some enormous, catastrophic event to destabilize our
government?

it just doesn't seem possible.

I don't think we have EITHER the level of individual pursecution OR enough general political unrest at this point to allow a revolution to occur. The "average man" on the street is still mostly unaware of the degredation of Rights, and so has no reason to give up his safe home and family life for the life of a revolutionary.

It will happen, eventually, but not right now.

I think the Vietnam War proved pretty well that guerilla warfare still works. The question is whether or not the American people would support a revolution. In the 60's, I'm sure it seemed like a definite possibility, but people today put way too much trust in the government for own good. I think one of the problems with democratic elections is it gives people the illusion of control over their government, so they're less likely to revolt against it. In fact, I think it could very well be that the passage of the 26th Amendment in 1971 prevented a popular uprising from occuring. Another problem, it seems, is that the people with guns in America tend to be flag-waving nationalists while those who have the biggest problems with our government tend to also be anti-gun. In this way, I think, the American left is shooting itself in the foot, so to speak.

You also have to remember there is a HUGE percentage that think that people like us are wacko's. There was a debate this weekend amongst friends and after everyone said which puppet they are voting for they asked me who I was and I mentioned Badnarik, they just looked at me like I was an alien. The same ol same ol came out: a vote for a libertarian is a vote for...blah, blah, blah. I mentioned that I vote for the person I think will be the best candidate and NOT who I think would win. They were stumped and I smiled.

I don't think it is "probable" that there will be a revolution since those asking the question tend to make up about 2% of the population.

my parents live in a gated community. they have there own private police, water, and electric. big large homes facing a golf course. about a mile from there is a large trailer park. i drove through the trailer park once and it reminded me of some 3rd world countries that i have visited. i sometimes wonder if the have-nots will revolt against the haves.

Democracy is designed to stop revolts - obviously if a properly democratically elected government is in power then the majority want them there, and the majority would tend to beat the minority in a civil war.

Usually it's the haves who rally up people to revolt and provide the ideological foundation for revolution, and then they get the have-nots to fight it for them.  A good example would be the Russian Revolution.

Most revolutions would probably fit that description. The people we consider the "founding fathers" of this country were mostly wealthy aristocrats, while peasant farmers did most of the fighting.

Marx said that the only way a people could revolt successfully depends on how organized the people are, their access to arms, and the willingness for the classes to cooperate.

It wasn't until pressure was put on South Africa that the whites reconsidered what they were doing and started to make changes.
